Subject: X-190 hull vs bassboat hull?

I'm not realistically shopping in the next year or so but am really curious--the x-190 layout seems perfect for me, but I don't really see many boats like it out there...essentially it appears to be a "mullet" boat--bassboat up front, multispecies boat in back! I've never been able to see one though, never seen a single tuffy anywhere actually...I think the nearest dealer is about an 18 hour drive away, so it's unlikely I'll ever be able to take a ride in one to find out for myself.

Question is on the hull--is it really a deeper V, or is it essentially a bassboat hull? Obviously it's not as deep a V as Tuffy's regular deep V boats or a Ranger fisherman or the like...is it somewhere in between, or is it basically a bassboat hull with a different interior layout? I'm specifically wondering about rougher water performance as well as draft, how it drifts in the wind, etc. It is a light boat for it's size (tuffy says 1300 lb hull, which is very close to my 17' Lund and several hundred lbs lighter than any comparably sized bassboat I could find.) so also curious about what engines people are using on it--that thing must FLY with a 200, and must do just fine with a 150-ish. How skittish is it to drive (chine walk, etc), about like a fast bassboat or more stable? Anything else??

Thanks!!

The X190 is a deeper hull with more deadrise than most bass boats. It's not as fast as some of the 19' class bass boats, and that's why.

Thanks a bunch, appreciate the reply...that sounds like the boat for me, wonder why there aren't more boats like that from other manufacturers? Did I hear a rumor that there may be a 176 size coming at some point?

Better start saving a lot of pennies!

I bought an 2012 X-190 and it is a slick ride!! handles great in big water (Lake St. Clair) and absolutely flies! I run mine with a 200 HP optimax and she'll do 63 MPH with 2 people and gear. Unbelievable amount of space and storage. I have the rear casting deck but had a bait box built for that spot instead. So I still get the extra casting space but I dont have baits laying all over the place. I would highly recommend it!! Everyone at Tuffy has been great to deal with as well!

I also purchased a 2012 x-190 and do not have one bad word. Its fast as hell and smooth at the same time. Gets into skinny water great and will handle the big stuff. I have the 200 opti with a rev 4. Not sure what top end is as I have only had it up to 55 with some extra throttle left over. This is my second Tuffy, the first one I had for 7 years and didn't have any issues thats why I bought another. I'm still blown away how fast this boat gets out of the hole and on plane.

I am running the X-190 this year and have put some serious time in this boat...fishing out of pretty much 6-7 days a week since March. It can go into very shallow water without any issues, like 1 ft....I can also handle the big waves that Lake St. Clair and Mille Lacs and dish out. The front deck is huge but sits just a bit higher off the water than bass boats, with a few inches of free board at your feet. It's a great boat, fun to drive and amazing to fish out of. If and when you are in the market for a boat, I would highly suggest checking out the Tuffy X-190.

I really want to get this boat but there are no dealers in MI so tough to get in to get a feel for this boat. Will this boat handle Lake Erie as well?

It's not a big water boat if you are looking at Lake Erie every day. Sure, it will handle a bad day on most waters, but I would not consider the X190 a 'Lake Erie' boat. That's the 1890 to 2100 series.

How long of a rod will fit in the rod locker of a X-190 and 1890?

i know if you put a 9' rod in one of the top middle holes in the locker, it will fit. i don't think i've tried it in any of the other holes.

I too have had my eye on this boat. My two questions are?

Has anyone run this boat on Lake of the Woods? How does it handle rougher water? Where do you put your net? Is the single console better so you can place the net next to the passengers seat?

Lake of the Woods would be no problem. The net fits in the cockpit in a dual console.

LOTW would be no issue at all. I ran the X-190 all of 2012 and had it on some pretty rough waters...like I mentioned above...Mille lacs and Lake St. Clair. This is an amazing boat that rides very nice and can handle rough water. It truly is a special hybrid boat.
