The largest Hunting & Fishing Show in the U.S.A. was brought to cancelation by vendors pulling out of the Harrisburg Sportsmen Show Feb 2 to Feb 10th.The show promoter had banned assault rifles at the show. This backfired on them, over 200 vendors pulled out of the show, bringing the show to be cancelled. Feb 28th there will be a gun owners march to Albany,NY ,1000's of gun owners will disrupt the NY Legislators to show they are not happy with NY States New Gun Law

Glad to hear the vendors stood up for what they believe in! It would be nice to know who the vendors were.

From the mayor of the fine city of Harrisburg.

"It is also unfortunate that legal gun owners and the many families who have enjoyed a long tradition of hunting in the beautiful rural environment around the region will be deprived of this major event because of a controversy caused by firearms manufacturers who profit from the sale of weapons designed for the mass killing of human beings.

"Many regional arms and outdoor vendors and related services have been hurt by the postponement as well. This kind of conflict within the firearms community is the result of years of polarization between the majority American sportsmen and hunters who exercise their constitutional right to bear arms and at the same time favor reasonable illegal gun controls, and a minority of NRA members who refuse to recognize the very real problem of illegal military style weaponry and the mass havoc such weapons facilitate."

Way more non-gun companies, let alone non-at, than even gun or ammo companies. Seems the hunting and outdoor community has sloken pretty clearly

To bad our government officials don't want to address the real problem. Mental health! The question shouldn't be number of rounds in a clip or assault rifles.
It should be: Is this person mentally stable or are they not?
Then the question is how do you put that into a program that works.
I don't have that asnwer.
Sorry, almost fell off my soapbox.

If you break down the numbers I believe that 85% of the gun violence comes from gang related activity. Why aren't we spending as much time, money and effort curbing that? How many kids died via gun violence in the hood? Way more then 23 I would guess. But since they're poor non-white kids nobody says anything even though the President is non-white and promised to represent "his" people. Very sad.

I am sure the promotor is insured, but I am guessing the town and outfitters are going to take a pretty big hit. Fun to watch democracy at work. BR

I personally love it when people tell me how to live. Funny, those same people really hate it when I try to impose rules on the way they live... Where are those cool signs from the past "Don't Tread On Me"! Unfortunately this is taking on an internal US meaning vs what it used to mean. I will never give up my rights or my weapons.

James

The town will likely take a hit, but I'm curious whether it's going to hurt the outfitters. My suspicion is that many of them dropped to save the expenses of traveling. I don't think there was too much to be gained from the show. My speculation is that the gun restrictions were just a good excuse to stop coming. And it improved their image at the same time.

Certainly nothing to be excited about as an event go-er. The fishing section in particular consisted of local retailers, so there wasn't much point dropping $20 on admission to see the same old thing I can see the rest of the year. I've been able to get free tickets from time to time, so it was something to keep me amused for a day, but I still wasn't able to find something worth buying at any price for years.

The Article that I read, stated that the local area would loose up to 80 million dollars ...... that's a big economic hit.

And the capital punishment system adds fuel to the fire, allowing convicts to form gangs and racial tension among themselves while they are in jail.

The quote above attributed to the mayor of Harrisburg said it perfectly. And the promoter was banning ASSAULT RIFLES. Not shotguns, hunting rifles, pistols... Sorry I will be the voice of dissension here. Automatic or semiautomatic rifles capable of firing multiple rounds per second are designed for one purpose only and serve absolutely no purpose of legally being owned in our society, other than in the hands of our military and law enforcement.  Kudos to the promoter for standing up for what he believes is right, knowing full well he would be in the very small minority with his "clientele".

FishHateMe,
Typically, this sort of comment comes from a lack of education and complete unfamiliarity with firearms. That is not an excuse, it's not a 'reason', it's just plain ignorance. Inexcusable.

Here's five guns.

Tell me which of the following is an assault weapon?

I have the top gun in my case.

To save you the embarrassment, the weapons are identical, firing exactly the same number of 'rounds per second'. Absolutely NO difference between the action and barrel. Same round. In fact, one of the weapons below the stock Ruger won't take as large a magazine as the model I own. All fire the same round. It's a freaking squirrel gun.

My son has a .223; same round as an AR15. He can hit a target at 200 yards 5 times in a few seconds and switch out a 10 round clip in a couple seconds. It looks like the first rifle, except it's a BOLT action and obviously a varmint rifle.

There are about 650,000 to 700,000 hunters in the woods in WI during the 9 day deer season. probably half are hunting with a weapon that are: 'semiautomatic rifles capable of firing multiple rounds per second'

Still would be deadly in the hands of an insane person.

A true assault weapon is fully automatic, and those weapons are already severely controlled.

I suggest you head to the 'basement' and read the thread there for more information.

I am not sure it has anything to do with education. You are pointing out that in functionality there is not much difference in the guns, and that would be correct. That however is not the discussion. Perception is the issue, saying this "hunting" gun can do the same as this "assault" gun doesn't really matter. Hopefully out of this whole ordeal, there will be enforced responsibility when it comes to gun ownership and liability if you fail to keep your guns out of the hands of dangerous people. Guns used by criminals are not the issue, there are always going to be armed criminals. The issue is arming kids and the mentally ill and historically where these people have acquired their weapons they used in the larger shootings. We have created a situation that enables these people. There already IS liability if one fails to keep one's weapons away from dangerous folks or even those NOT dangerous; accidents happen.

I know a little about this one.

It has EVERYTHING to do with education. Obviously. Ban 'assault weapons' and you ban squat. Fact.

The last whacko got his guns from his Mom.

Enough.
