those water decals sure do look nice, but if you would have actually painted that completely i would be be kneeling on your feet and bow to you as my new lure painting God :D just saying you should challenge your self even more with what you can do with an airbrush, you certainly seem to have "the gift" when i look at your other work. maybe its just me but i've always thought that those decals were little bit too easy.

Thanks for the compliments, Mikko first I must say your work is beautiful, great stuff. I would also bow down to the person who could paint a photo image on the side of a bait, nearly impossible. I have been a fish reproduction artist long before I was a baitmaker so making things look real is implanted in my brain. To make a lure blank look real you need to have all of the scale detail and body detail present to even come close to this these photo baits. And to achieve that airbrushing is only 60% of that, the rest comes from techniques that are done by hand to create depth and detail. That is not something that would fit in my schedule, way too much time involved, so the decals work out for everyone in my case. Believe it or not I have time wrapped up in these, I do not just slap a decal on them and be done with it. The gill plate and face are carved to create depth which I think makes these stand out. They just need to be put together rite imo to get good results with a decal. I included some pics of reproductions I did, the airbrush ties everything together but there is a lot of hand work done to these. Thanks again for all the compliments. BCS22 neat stuff! In the last year with photo finishing now lures look sooooooooo real. I agree with you that there is so much more than slapping a decal on the side of the lure. Its about the shape and other prep work that is under it. The decals fascinate me, not sure I will ever try it.

Funny that you have done the replica's first and then on to the lures. I am going the opposite way. I couldn't get enough area to paint on with the lures sizes. I have always been fascinated with taxidermy but did not want to have fish skins drying in the house. I just started to make fiberglass replica's two weeks ago and just finished a fiberglass mold of a 12 pound walleye last week. I am starting a steelhead mold tonight , it is thawing. It was an interesting smell of fresh walleye and resin! LOL The steelie looks incredible. I hope mine comes out 1/2 as nice as that one. Keep up the great work! I hope to post some pics soon. Maybe you can give me some pointers on that subject on the do's and don'ts.

Hey John, thank you for the kind words. I would be glad to help you out in any way I can. There are many tricks of the trade that will separate your work from others, mostly in the paint and finish work. You can inbox me anytime with questions. I still love to paint reproductions, just got into building baits about a year ago. I wish you lots of luck and I'm sure your fish will look great with a little practice, please post some pics. And I also want to say your baits are nothing short of amazing, they look really really nice. Ski if you really want repaints done inbox me, but I got two dogs so I'll pass on that offer lol. Thanks

Thanks BC, I see things I need to watch out for with undercuts and such. I like making the molds. I want to some wildlife artis type of things maybe down the road.

The walleye came out pretty well but I still see some things I will do different on the next one.

The first pic is getting ready to do the first fiberglass mold side. The fish was set in sand with a little plaster.
The second pic was when I popped it out of the mold after joining the two halves. I still have to shave the seam down and fix the undercut chips from the mold removal......... Maybe this weekend. I made the mold of the fins last night. I hope to cast some this evening after I get the kids to bed.

Brown trout are my favorite. That is super nice and holding up well. I have a brown trout musky lure in progress but I pushed it aside playing with these fiberglass replica molds.

Here are those pics. I just set the steelhead in place a couple of hours ago. It will be ready in the next hour for the resin gellcoat for the inner mold.

John they look sweet man, I can see it has all of it's scales intact which is important when picking a fish to mold especially for competition purposes. And the detail came out nice and sharp , thats gonna look nice on the wall. I'm not sure if your familiar with this but there is a lot of good info on there http://taxidermy.net/. There is also lots of video material out there you may want to look into that also. Here's a tip when you grind your seems down use bondo spot putty over it and wet it with denatured alchohol and smoth it out with your finger. Then wet sand with 300 grit it and prime it white and your seem is ready for paint. Nice job John you'll have it down in no time from the looks of these so far. Let me know when you start to put them together and I can give you a material list of things that you will need to do all your finish work. Brian

Hey fellas,

i would love it if this could turn into a tutorial? Tigger cool start...cant wait for the next pics. I have zero knowledge on replicas..so did you embed the fish half way into a resin material to make a mold of it and repeat with the other side?

please continue with the progress...this post has taken a very cool turn.

best,

Thanks Brian for the tip on the seam prep. I will try that tomorrow afternoon after I get back from steelhead fishing.

After building up the gellcoat and mother shell I flipped the steelie over. The second side skin was a little wrinkled so I decided to use the half shell to practice paint patterns. I hope to cast some sides by the end of the weekend and try some brookie , brown , and steelie patterns. It will be a helpful pc for the fishing lure patterns also. I will have to ckeck out that taxidermy site this weekend.

There are a couple of neat videos on making casts of fish. I think they are on youtube. One is making a mold of crappie. The other is on the search engine "Bing" type in "making a fish replica" It is of a video of a guy making a cast of a barracuda.

Tigger,
Big Fan of your fishing lures. I think they look great. Did it take years of practice or did you start painting like that overnight? I am sure your replicas will look as good as your lures. I hope someday my lures look as good as yours.

They are all works of art and take patience and time. Many techniques and processes to go along with finished products and I simply love looking at what different people have to offer.

I feel anyone who takes the initiative to use their creativity to make something on their own deserves t be commended. Many great crafters on this site and I'm proud to be a part of it! Keep your great works coming!
