Hey guys I'm heading to cancun in January for a week. I was wondering if I could bring any musky gear and go for som barracuda or something or maybe someone can point me the right direction for a guide or charter thanks

Why go to Cancun? Why not a week of ice fishing at Lac Seul in January? If this is a first or second honeymoon, all the better. Lots of time together in the cabin.

Fishing in the ocean is 100x better than ice fishing and is on par (maybe even better) than muskie fishing. Steve if you are serious about fishing down there, you will want to get out of "Cancun proper" I've fished a lot in Mexico and if you get out of the "tourist area" the fishing is 10x better. Here is an idea : http://www.pescamaya.com/holbox-tarpon-fishing.html

Steve-
I fished with Cancun Tarpon Fishing last year. They fish the lagoon, on the inside of the Cancun loop, which is full of mangroves and sand flats. I can't post the link because it makes the C word in the URL, but Google it.

We fished with heavy bass spinning stuff and caught the sh*t out of the baby 'cudas on topwater. They were following sometimes 4-5 at a time before one would explode on the lure. We did see some in the 4-foot class, so I would think you could bring some musky tackle and try it, as we did not hook any big ones on the smaller plugs.

If you are going in January I would go offshore. Around that time the sailfishing should be excellent with multiple fish days common. I was down there in July and we had great luck with this outfit one day http://www.deepseafishingcancun.com/season.htm aboard the Kianah the boat wasn't the nicest one out there but he put us on fish. I have never been down in January but have fished with several different boats down there and they all say January and February is the time to go for sails.

For what it's worth, I would go down and fish out of playa del carmen over cancun as well. I went out with Capt. Edy Pena on his Panga, and in 4 hours... my girlfriend and I caught over 250 trigger fish, bluefish, snapper, and a few barracuda. The time I went fishing out of cancun I think we caught 3 fish.

It's about a 30 minute ride south to Playa if you are staying in Cancun.

I guess it all depends on what your after inshore I would definitely try to get away from the cancun area. We have also gone out of Isla Mujeres a few times which is a short ferry ride from Cancun. The offshore outfits pretty much all fish the same areas it all comes down to boat, service, and quality of bait IMO, and you usually get what you pay for. But for that time of year I would be going after sails.
