Location: Mt. Zion, IL | For those of you who use 5" screen units, the following post may be helpful. I have a Lowrance HDS5.
Since I have a utility boat, I made the depth finder case shown in the pictures below. The case is made from a product called Azek and now it is about 4 years old. All hardware is 316SS. The gps signal is not interfered with even though the head unit is recessed into the unit. Recessing the head unit allowed me to store the case against a flat object and keep the screen protected during transportation. I use a suction cup mounted transducer on the transom with Lowrance's suction cup mount. These are getting hard to find, so buy one if you are interested in using this for fly ins or on a resort boat.

I also rigged the charger with a quick connect plug so that I did not have to take the screen out of the case while charging. I bought an extra set and use one of each as a protective cap to keep from contacting the battery terminals and to keep the connector from corroding. The feet shown are rubber stoppers for test tubes.
You may be able to find someone locally who uses this material (Azek) for custom exterior molding, or you could build a similar unit out of wood and stain/treat it. The 18 amp hour battery allows me to fish all day (12-16 hours) without having to charge the battery. You may opt for a larger battery or carry a backup if you are using this unit for a week straight.
