Posts: 880 Location: New Berlin,Wisconsin,53151 | Has anyone welded a lower end that got cracked due to water freezing? Didn't get to it in time this year and the cold weather put a 3" frown just above the shaft housing. A couple of guys at work recommened having it welded. What do you think? Bruce

Posts: 68 | Not a problem with a good welder. I had a small 1 1/2" crack welded on my lower unit just last season. Ken tried to grind the weld flush but it kept seeping water so the only side effect I have is you can see the weld. PS- Make sure there is no inner damage to the inside of the unit, that ice can really mess things up inside there.

Posts: 208 Location: Sun Prairie, WI | It kept seeping water cause the aluminum used is cast aluminum and is full of impurities. It does a lot of boiling when welding. If you grind the weld down you will more than likely open up multiple spots of porosity in the weld. Some cases will weld better than others. Some are just horrible and a complete nightmare to weld.
