Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Record Fish ?

Subject: Record Fish ?

The post on the New Illinois Record Fish got me thinking ( I Know this could be Dangerous )but should a fish any fish be recognized as a Official State or possibly World record if the fish was caught from a "PRIVATE" lake or pond?

My thought on this is that the fish should be recognized however not as an "OFFICIAL" record but as a secondary record due to lack of general public access

Don't want to start a heated debate just a discussion topic

Whats your thought?

My definition of Private vs Public is

Private: Any Lake or Pond that is Used soley for the Use of Home owners or Sub division Residents or Club Members excluding all others.

Public: Any Lake or Pond that has direct access for use by the general public and/or has a pay launch that can be used by the general public.

Great question John. Personally, I feel any fish taken from a private pond or lake SHOULD NOT be viewed as a candidate for a state record. On a somewhat related viewpoint, Muskies Inc. allows fish to be registered for points if taken from a private pond, lake, or sportsmens' club. I STRONGLY dissagree with this ruling. There are those that I know of that fish a private sporting club where muskies are stocked, well fed and looked after with careful eyes. It is basically a giant aquarium that these people pay (a very hefty amount to belong I might add) to go to and fish. I dont agree with it at all.

I agree with XL, After reading the previous state record post I made a phone call to my uncle, and YES his friend got a bigger fish out of a somewhat more common lake, but it is a private lake. Just a little hint, there are 50+" fish being caught on private lakes in Illinois.

I know my aunt lives on a private lake in Des Plaines, when I go there and just fish from her shore the average bass is about 5lbs. It's literally like shooting fish in a barrel. I agree it should never be considered if a record is caught from a private lake. But that's okay with my if I can catch a 50+" fish..haha

IMHO, a big fish is a big fish and the angler should get their propers. What are you guys worried about - some guy growing a 70lb. musky in their bathtub and landing it on 2# test?
What if the next world record comes out of one of those secret Lake X’s that nobody knows about? Should they not count too?

What about lakes that you can rent boats on but not launch your own? Is that private or public.

This whole conversation was hammered on last off-season too. I believe the same Illinois lake started the whole thing as well. As I understand it, you can rent boats on that lake if you are not a homeowner. The lady holding the large hybrid in the other post is my Mom. If you asked her I think she be just as likely to tell you about the numerous fishless days as she would the conquests. Having fished the lake I can tell you it is soooo far from "shooting fish in a barrel". In fact, it's a great deal like most other lakes in that there are days you see a bunch of fish and days that you see nothing.

I've heard the same discussion about Dairymans in Vilas county. I think what we have here is a kind of "forbidden fruit syndrome". If you can't have it, it must be something great.

As far as what should and shouldn't be allowed as a record... I don't know how I feel about it. I think we would encourage a great deal of misinformation if they weren't allowed. I think there's enough that when it comes to big fish already.

Just an opinion.

I don't know if this is a fair comparison or not, but I thought I would throw it out.

To the best of my knowledge, if you shoot a Pope and Young, or Boone and Crockett buck on a private game preserve they will not recognize the buck in their record books.....

I have to agree with Craig on this one. A 300 acre private lake can be a very tough nut to crack, as well as a 400 acre private game preserve. I'm not sure where I stand on this one. Interesting. God bless.

God Bless us everyone.....

What about fly-in lakes that hold "trophy-only" pike? Fish in the near 40 pound bracket can be caught. You can only get there by float plane, but if you aren't booked with the outfitter, you can't fish it?

Craig, thanks for your view of the subject. I hold your opinion in high regard, and believe me, I know about those fishless days on said lake. By the way, when can I go and have one of those days? [] []
