Location: Eastern Ontario | I like a lot of other guys have had trouble with boat partners not familiar with the net pulling the handle out of the yoke when extending. I drilled a hole in the handle on the opposite side from the existing latch hole 1/2 inch further back than the existing hole' and moved the latch I installed two 1/8 cap screws positioned so it stops the latch in the correct position. Now I'm a happy camper because with the fin saver mesh I love the lightness of this net edit unfortunately I was unable to attach the pictures if anyone would like them I can email

Posts: 625 Location: S.W. WI | Good Idea. I can't believe Beckman hasn't come up with an auto locking handle yet!! Seems like a no brainer. My buddy lost a WHALE of a Tiger on the Chip when his wife could not get the Beckman to lock. I do love their net, but I can't understand why they haven't fixed that issue. -Jon

Location: Eastern Ontario | I think it was because at one time you could get different length handles for this net

Posts: 2024 | I filled the handle of my net with foam too much and the latches were a pain to depress. Thankfully goof off worked wonders on cleaning that out. I just have a float attached to it now, but may try the foam again.

Posts: 906 Location: Canada | I have my handle filled with foam and did a step by step on how and what I did. I'll try and find the post and pictures to copy and paste if anyone's interested. As for the handle I think this is a good mod and will have to see if I can do it with my foam filled handle but we always extend out the handle at the beginning and wet the net (kind of a tradition when we hit the water).

Posts: 44 Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | I did a similar modification to my Beckmann a few years ago. There is no way to pull the handle out now and it lines up easily when you want to extend it. Posts: 1901 Location: MN | It appears with this last mod it takes advantage of the cutout to allow a screw in the tube yet have the spring post and hole remain in the same spot. But what is the purpose of the cap screw behind the spring post?

Location: Eastern Ontario | jballs although my mod works well and I'm happy with it I think yours is a little easier and acomplishes the same thing. I also am curious about the purpose of the cap screw behind the spring post? How is it were smarter than the people at Beckman

Posts: 44 Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | It is a combination stop/safety feature. When you pull the handle back the spring post cannot go any farther than that rear machine screw. That machine screw is long enough that it stops the spring post, yet short enough that it doesn't touch the handle. When you set it up right it clicks into place perfectly every time. The top screw keeps it lined up in the groove. I hope that this helps if not I can post some more pictures or screw lengths. Jaimey

Can someone put up pictures or directions of filling the handle with foam? Does it float like a cork if you drop it? Or just sink a little bit slower.. Haha

Location: Eastern Ontario | I'm unsure why you you need more than the stopper in the notch in the end of the handle. I think you could fill the handle with strofoam craft balls or cut astrip from a pool noodle. some fill the handle with expanding foam I don't think it has to be filled just enough to creat a plug trapping air and keeping water out. a plug of silicone might work

Posts: 906 Location: Canada | I hope it never happens but in case it does at least I tried. The Beckman I modified looks to be almost water tight in the handle from the factory but when I sprayed some lube to get the rubber handle end off it did run out the other end a little. There is a stopper in the handle in front of the spring loaded pin and the rubber handle end does fit tight. Step 1 Remove the rubber handle end from the net handle. I used some lubricant and a flat blade screw driver. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b99/81CABRIO/Fishing/beckman1.jpg Step 2 Remove the spring loaded pin by pressing it all the way in and some long needle nose pliers. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b99/81CABRIO/Fishing/beckman2.jpg Here you can see the rubber stopper ahead of where the spring loaded pin is. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b99/81CABRIO/Fishing/beckman3.jpg Step 3 I used some black silicone sealant. Dumped it in on top of the rubber stopper and spread it around whith a chopstick. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b99/81CABRIO/Fishing/beckman5.jpg Once it was all dry I re-installed the spring loaded clip and again a long set of needle nose pliers may be useful. Step 4 I then used a can of spray foam and filled the handle. Keep backing off the nozzle and dunking it back into the handle till you feel that the handle is full. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b99/81CABRIO/Fishing/beckman6.jpg Let the spray foam expand and dry. Then cut the end off of the expanded foam at the handle (i just broke it off and then cleaned up the outside of the handle. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b99/81CABRIO/Fishing/beckman7.jpg Step 5 Again get out your tube of black silicone sealant and pour a big wad of it on top of the spray foam end of the handle. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b99/81CABRIO/Fishing/beckman8.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b99/81CABRIO/Fishing/beckman9.jpg Step 6 Reinstall the rubber handle end of your net handle making sure that you push it all the way down. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b99/81CABRIO/Fishing/beckman10.jp...

Posts: 1901 Location: MN | Jballs, doesn't or can't the front screw stop it precisely so the spring post pops up in the hole? Is the second one just backup? If it is helpful to have it also, please do advise the length of the second screw and also the distance behind the spring post, either from the center of the post or from the backside of the post. Thanks!

Posts: 44 Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | I apologize for not responding earlier, it has been a busy day. I set mine up so that the top screw is for lining up the groove. The screw has to be smaller than the groove to fit in the groove. I couldnt find one that was narrow enough to fit the groove and tall enough to stop the handle. I was using screws that I had in my workshop so maybe the right screw can be found at the hardware store. If I didn't have the rear screw my handle could still pullout if someone kept their finger on the spring and yanked it past the opening. The rear screw on mine prevents that. As you can see in the photos I had to use washers to space out the rear screw. Again I was using whatever I had at home to make it work. A trip to the hardware store would have made for a more precise setup. Looking at the first photo, you could use small washers to space up the screw. Then the rear screw wouldn't be necessary.
