| Daggone! Rough neighborhood! from ABC News:
WALKER, Minn. Dec. 3 — Two 16-year-old boys
charged with killing a blind man might have been drunk
when they allegedly beat him with his walking stick and
an ax handle on the Leech Lake Reservation, authorities
said.
Darrell (Louie) Bisson, was walking his dog when he
was attacked and left to die on the sidewalk near his
home Friday night in the northern Minnesota town of
Cass Lake.
The 16-year-old boys were arraigned Monday in Cass
County District Court on two counts each of
second-degree murder.
Bisson's death "could be no more than a drunken, stupid
thing," said Cass County Sheriff's Office investigator Mike
Diekmann, who was trying to determine whether two other teenagers also were
involved.
Authorities said the weapons used in the attack were an ax handle and an athletic
shoe one of the boys was wearing when he allegedly stomped on Bisson's face,
leaving the pattern of the shoe sole.
Bisson was pronounced dead at a hospital. His head was severely cut and bruised,
back and front, a criminal complaint said.
The two boys were ordered to held in separate juvenile detention centers pending a
Dec. 10 hearing on a motion to prosecute the boys as adults. |

| I'll tell you what.......I've been going to Cass for 20 years and the area has gotten progressively worse during that time. You don't want to mess around up there. I've known 3 people that have died......Alcoholism, drugs, guns.....it's all taken it's toll up there. A school bus driver was shot to death a few years ago in Cass Lake. My policy....stay out of town at night unless you are with a popular local. |

| Sad to think that a beautiful area like this in Northern MN is more dangerous than being in downtown Minneapolis at night.
Sad, really sad. |

| When I saw the topic, I thought it was referring to what I took on the water during the outing! |

| I believe we'll see more of this sort of thing, at least over the next couple years. Why? We'll see a drastic increase in the number of people who feel totally hopeless and helpless, folks in that state of mind will heavily self-medicate to feel better (at least not feel rotten) and they'll do incredibly dumb/violent things because they think they are lashing back with nothing to lose. And it's not just indians; St. Louis MO currently has the highest rate of violent crime for a big city - relatively few native americans live there.
If you want to better understand what I'm trying to describe, just read "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Stienbeck. The Joads/Oakies were dirt poor and desperate but their strong family/community values set boundaries for their behavior. Those sorts of values have greatly eroded since the days of the dust bowl. After reading "Grapes" read "Less Than Zero" by ? for contrast.
I know I really don't know very much, but I know this....I'd rather drink beer and fish with a Joad than a Bush or a Clinton any day.[;)] |
