Planning a trip to Leech in July. I am interested in a local muskie guide who will really teach me some new things about that lake. I just don't want to be taken on a "milk run" to a bunch of common Leech Lake spots. I know the lake reasonably well and have a decent boat, so I am not looking for a day of fishing, more of a detailed education. Who are the Leech Lake muskie specialists who will really have some interesting and unique information for me? Who would people recommend? Three names I have come up with on my own are Dan Craven, Jim Murphy, and Dan Dean. Comments? Other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Posts: 32934 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I would call Murph! All three are great guides, and would treat you well, maybe even put you on to one of those Leech Lake big girls.

Posts: 69 | Hiya, Dan Craven is one of the best all-around fishermen I've ever known. Great guy too. His number's 218-547-2869. Call after around 6:30 in the evening because he's a baseball coach in Walker and he's at practice or games this time of year Murph's a riot to fish with and does very very well on Leech. Plus he's retured, and if he doesn't get a guide client to keep him busy he'll be spending all his time in the rocking chair on his deck or something ![]() Didn't realize Dan Dean guided, but if he does, he'd be great too. Couple other names in case these guys are booked would be Al Maas (bet he's booked solid though) Ted Gwynn, Jimmy Flesch or Chip Leer. Really, anyone from the Leech Lake Guide's Coalition is a safe bet. Cheers, RK

Posts: 391 | Hi, Never fished Leech or anyone listed previously except with Chad Cain. He will teach you a ton about the system with no bs and is a great person to spend a day with. My opinion if you go that route, However I am sure any of the others would be great as well. good luck with your decision kly

Posts: 793 Location: Ames, Iowa | Spent an August day with Murph about 3 years ago. Hot as blazes, but caught no fish. Still, I'd go back with him in a minute if I could afford it. I learned a lot. Boat control, boat placement, desirable depths, trolling, baits, colors, mistakes we make, spots on spots, etc. He will put you first like I'm sure all the other guides would. You'll get your education. All the best, Don
