Posts: 400 Location: North/Central WI | 3/0 VMC short shank 4x heavy....I like the short shank hooks because they are slightly smaller but still offer a wide gap. I use pliers and tweak the hook points out away from the shank slightly to widen the gap a little bit more.

Location: Contrarian Island | i use 3 different hooks for the various sizes of suckers...for smaller 10-12" suckers I use a single hook that I think is a 2/0 double X strong Eagle Claw, I think 374... for regular 'Wi Size' rigs I use 4/0 Mustad 9650bz round bend.. for mn size rigs/fish I use a 5/0 eagle claw 774

Posts: 833 | I used Mustad 3551 7/0, but I'm usually using a 16"-19" Sucker. The question I have is bent hook or safety pin?

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | Brad P - 10/29/2012 2:54 PM The question I have is bent hook or safety pin? Neither. T the hook or cut one treble off and tie a small(size 6 or 8) wire aberdeen single hook backwards along the shaft and just scrape a few scales away and stick it in. It stays while fishing, and pops right out on the hookset.

Posts: 833 | Reef that is not a bad idea at all. I just started with the shrink wrapped safety pins this year. Have you ever had the shrink tube fail?

Have you ever had the shrink tube fail? It sometimes rips, but more often, the hook or pin will turn as the shrink tube works loose. It is a quicker/easier way to apply the pin or hook though when in a hurry and nice to have along in the boat. When tying with bucktail thread, and glued, it tends to not come loose or turn after dealing with a fish and repositioning everything. The trade off is it takes a bit more time to do, but not bad. You will like the little hooks on the NewG rig(stands for New Greg but pronounced newj) for ease, speed, and effectiveness of hooking up suckers.
