Location: Harrisburg PA On the banks of the susquehanna. | Been a lurker for a while and decided to join the other night. A little about myself first.
I live in south central PA along the Susquehanna river. (not the musky capital by any stretch). I have been targeting them lately.
I am mainly a smallie guy and love my smallies. Do some kayak guides and got over 500 hours on the water this year. Love my smallies.
We do have some musky in the area and I will be targeting them more in the upcoming years.
I am looking for a few good starter outfit. Mainly a LH bait caster or 2 and some 7'6"/8'6" rods. The fish around here are a bit smaller. Mainly in the mid 20's to high 30's inch
range. I will be throwing 6/7" jerks and glides mainly with some top water in the mix. and some med.bucktails.
My price range is in the $350 to $450 per outfit.
What would you guys recommend? I will not be using these outfits but 30/50 outings a year at the most. 4 to 6 hours per outing.
Any help for this newbie would be highly appreciated. |

Location: Maine Township, MN | If you're on a budget, can't go wrong with a Tackle Industries MH power rod. Pair that with an Abu Garcia 6501-C3 (LH) and you're good to go. That'll be ~$235 and you'll have extra to spend on line, baits, and tackle. |

I was thinking about the AG reels or one of the luna reels by daiwa. The TI rods look like a good deal so will be looking into them a little more. I will also be contacting Jawbreaker as I have a few smallie rods from him that I spec'ed and he built. He does nice work and the price is right.

You can easily get some nice outfits for $350. First, go with a Tackle Industries XH for your main rod. It will throw anything in the size range you described. The MH is a nice rod as well. It handles the smaller baits very well and will throw 4oz with ease if you need to go that big.
As far as reels, you can get a used Revo Toro or Curado that will fit your budget. Also, don't overlook the Revo SX.
Once you start targeting muskies, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the size of the fish you start seeing in this area.

For that money, you can get a pretty nice outfit, the recommendations will come. |

Location: Land of the Musky | FYI-Tackle Industries just got the new 7'6" rods in and will be ready to ship ASAP. Also got 50 hot pink 7'6" MH rods with this production run. I am out right now but hope to get these up on the website soon. We are discontinuing the 8' rods for these 7'6" rod models.

Location: Harrisburg PA On the banks of the susquehanna. | Thanks for all the replies and PM's. I just paid for some rods and a reel. The reel is an Okuma ISIS lefty spooled W/ braid.
The rods are both St.Criox. One is an avid 7'6" H. The other is an 8' MH Top n Tail. I will be meeting him on Friday about an hour from the house.
I am still looking for another lefty round reel. Thinking about the luna 300L or 253L. I really like my daiwa gear for my smallie
fishing. They have stood the test of time and get used hard. I have some 8 yr,old emblems spinners that are smoother than my new shimano stradics. Just send them to get serviced every year.
Hope this don't turn into to much of an addiction tho. Fishing is my passion and the bigger the better.

| i am lefty have had a 251 curado forever, i have a luna isnt as smooth as the shimano, and durability the 251 has stood the test of time. rod 7'6 mh should be all you need good luck.0723 |

| A snoopy combo would be the bomb for muskies (excluding double 10s of course), stripers, inshore saltwater, etc.
A curado w/ a compre or ti rod would be within your price points.... If you aren't tossing lures more than 2 oz, a nice flipping rod could work too. |

| For the glider rod: Some people want a shorter rod, others like it longer. What is your preference? It is hard to make a suggestion without knowing those preferences on your part. Otherwise, you are just getting what other folks like. Just as an example, I use an 8'4" rod for my gliders, but many on here would tell you that is way too long. Mileage varies, hence you need to tell us what you want to get the best advice.
For the glider reel, I would strongly consider doing a 300EJ Curado, but replace the power handle with a regular paddle handle. The 32" of line pick up is very helpful when working glide style baits, IMHO.
For the other rod, in general I wouldn't go shorter than 8'6", the mechanical advantage in the figure 8 is very helpful. What do you consider a medium bucktail? Do you want to toss double 10s or do you consider that big? Also, for both the blades and the topwater, how important is speed to you? The answer to those questions will help guide what rod/reel makes the most sense for your needs. |

| There's a 9' XH Tackle Industries Split Grip on Craigslist for $100 (under the Harrisburg page) if you're interested in one of those. That might be fairly local for you depending on what you consider to be South Central PA. |

| I would say curado LH. Great reel for the money. Dont rule out a flippin stick for the smaller baits. I use mine a lot and love it. |

He wanta a lefty reel! The snoopy only comes in RH! You have to upgrade to the Mickey Mouse to get LH! NOOBIES...UGH!!

I do have a x-heavy/fast 7'2" casting rods that I use for large swim baits for bass. It is rated for 3/4 to 2 3/4 oz baits.
I will give that a go for some smaller stuff. I will pair that with an older 251B that I had serviced a few months ago.
40# or 50# tuff xp and it should work with some smaller baits. I also put a curado 301 EJ on lay a way so that is in the works.
Again thanks for all the replies to my post. You have all been a great help. I will let ya all know how I am making out.

| I do have a st croix mojo swimbait rod I use for prop topwater and small bucktails and twitch baits as well.. It can be a blast!
