Why does everyone crimp flouro leader material that is over 100#? Does it just become tougher to tie, or are there other reasons? I don't want to buy heavy flouro material if I cannot tie it.

I definitely don't speak for everyone else but I found when making leaders it's just easier to crimp the flouro and melt down the tip so it can't be pulled back through the crimp... I imiagine it would be a tough to tie 100# flouro and the crimp works just fine so I just stick with that

I am making my own fluoro casting leaders and can tie up to 200lb, never had one fail.

I crimp mine just to keep the tag end tidy and I figure it offers just one more "safety" in case I do have a knot problem. It also keeps the knot I tie in a loop form rather than tightening down tight to the swivel or snap.

I use 150# Seaguar and have no problem making knots. I use the "Lee Tauchen" knot. I know its formal name is something else (centuri maybe?) but if you google that you'll find it. I have also made a couple others with a different knot...worlds fair or something. I like the Tauchen knot because it looks nice and clean and I have had good luck with it and a crimp.

I hear a lot of people say they can't tie 130# fluoro. I have NO issue making good tight knots with 150, you just have to leave a 6-8" tag end to work with to form the loops needed.

I wouldn't dream of crimping my flouro leaders now. Find the right knot, get yourself a vice and tying the flouro is easy. I can put together a sucker rig with three tags in about two minutes.

IMO, you crimp flouro and you just gave the fish a pressure point or two to rub against. Just a matter of time before one fails.

Don't most, if not all saltwater anglers only crimp fluorocarbon leaders?

And my question is then what is the right knot?

I use the one Lee Tauchen uses.

Can somebody share their technique for the Tauchen knot? I've tried it and I end up with a decent knot but the flouro looks like a pigs tail after I torque the knot down.

I use 150# Seaguar Premier, always tie.....perfection loop knot...easy knot to tie and you always get a nice, straight loop of whatever size you want. Have never had one fail. Just lubricate the knot and cinch it down slowly and tight.

It may be cheating, but I use the Dubro nail knot tool, I tie up to 175# flourocarbon perfect every time. No glue or crimp on the tag end is needed. I have done all kinds of crazy tests on them, made a leash for my dads English Pointer, dragged and yanked 50# of brick, hung from the rafters in the garage you get the idea. As previously mentioned wetting the line as you slowly tighten the knot and you will be good to go. For most applications I use 130-150#.

I found the Tie-Fast Knot Tyer in the Magnum size. Does a great job in making professional looking Nail Knots. There are a bunch of videos on this. I've been making my own fluoro leaders for a few years now. Have never had one break. Tauchen's Knot is a Nail knot without using tools but it is hard to do with any flouro over 80 lb test--plus I ended up wasting a lot of line in order to make it look good.

As long as you are following the directions and tying the knot correctly, I'm guessing you might need to tighten up slower and make sure the knot is well lubricated. I actually try to push the loops together a little and wet the knot slightly to get it a little more compact. Then using about as much saliva as you can muster, tighten while using your fingers to help knot and loops slide down the mainline and snug up tight. To really get it tight grab the tag with pliers, put your fingers on top of the knot, and pull with the pliers and push down on the knot with your fingers. Should be quite snug.

If you are pig tailing the heavy fluoro my guess is you might be tightening the knot too quickly while it's also a little too dry.

One more thing - all the tightening should be done by pulling the tag end. While the knot is still fairly loose, pull on the main line to set the main loop to the size you want (probably tight to the swivel if you don't crimp it like I do), and then pull on the tag end to snug things up. If you just pull the main line to tighten up I could see how the main line might pig tail.

I'll have to give it another shot. I had been dipping the hole thing in water w/ dish soap for lubrication so I don't think that's the problem, perhaps I was going too fast or probably pulling on the wrong ends. Thanks for the help.

Crimping is fine as long as it is crimped properly.

I cut about a 16" to 18" piece of fluoro put my sleeves on & make my loops but before I crimp the sleeve I pull out the tag end & use a lighter to mushroom the end of the line then I pull the end back up to the sleeve , size up the loop & crimp.

Here's a link on proper crimping: http://www.leadertec.com/tipsandtechniques/crimp_techniques.html

Leadertec also sells a tool call the TraceMate for making nail knots for up to 500 Lb test but it's pricey after you add shipping costs. http://www.leadertec.com/store/product.php?xProd=283&xSec=10

Travis,

The Seagar loop knot is the best for fluorocarbon over 130#. Easier to tie than the Lee T knot. I use is for 200# without any problem. I use a "Board" with a hook to fasten the snap to. Stand on the board and pull on the swivel end with a nail through the swivel use as a lever. I will post some pics

This is how I tie a leader in the boat using my board and the Seagar Loop Knot.

http://seaguar.com/seaguar-community/loop-knot.htm

Pictures are of my "Board" with built in handle holder and hook. Dip entire leader into the lake before applying tension to knots. Once knots tighten up apply as much pressure as you want.

100 lb seagar with a luber up palamar knot is easy for me. Flare the tag ends with a torch.

That is 200 pound Seagar in the picture. # 8 swivel. I will take a close up picture and post soon. Easy to tie. Never had a failure.

I noticed that a few of the knots that were mentioned don't cinch tight to the swivel/snap. Does this cause any problems? The Lee T knot does cinch tight but it is tough for me to tie with fluro (130 lb).

I think it's better that way. I like the loops on the leader to swing freely so I can switch to different sized snaps or to a split ring if need be without having to change leaders.

I prefer to have a loop. I tie the Tauchen knot but don't tighten it tight to the swivel. I leave a loop and crimp the tag end. This keeps the loop open and works for me.

No problem, like I said above I tie all my own fluoro (200#) casting and mono (150#) trolling leaders. Again, never had one fail. I too am using a loop style knot.
