My kids are getting pretty good at chuckig lures with spin cast tackle.  My 8 year old son wants to throw some musky lures.  I think a bait casting rig will quickly put the damper on his enthusiasm. Has anybody tried a large spin casting reel rigged with braid on a short musky rod for this?  I have been saving an old 6' jerk bait rod for this purpose and am thinking about running to WalMart and grabbing the biggest spin cast reel that I can find and letting him have at it for awhile with a top raider or something light that is easy to fish.  I've never tried braid on a spin cast reel...

You will need the same diameter braid as the line the reel is designed for. It will work, but is hard on the reel for sure, get a higher quality spincast reel.

I wasn't much older than that when I started throwing a baitcaster. Might wanna give it a shot. I know I could have done it even younger, but it took a few years of convincing my parents to buy me one for Christmas!

my kids started throwing bait casters at age 5 or 6 ... the only limits he'll have is what you put on him. oh, and they can tell the difference between a good reel and a piece a crap quickly too.

get him a revo winch, not toro, or an abumatic 1276sli and replace the line.

Thorne built my son a rod that would float (lots of synthetic cork in the handle) and then a Curado for the reel. He can get used to a bait caster and you have nice jerkbait setup to use. You can let him pick out the colors for the rod and get his name put on it.

My son did the spinning reel gig for a year and then we moved to a baitcaster when he was 8. Three years later he's pretty darn good with the baitcaster and won't go back to a spinning reel for anything but Walleye fishing.

Give him a shot with a nice low profile baitcaster. The most important thing to remember is patience (for him and you). There will be lots of bid nests, but he'll get the hang of it.

We started with a bare lure and the baitcaster in the yard. Dad can have a cold one and the kid learns a lifelong skill.

I'd pass on both the spinning gear and start him on something softer than a jerk bait rod. Both of my sons started on baitcasters around 8 or 9 years of age. I'd get a mh bass set up like an abu garcia black max to start them on. Start them in the yard with casting sinkers and the brake set fairly tight. As they get better back the brake off little by little and then swap to lighter sinkers. This worked great for my children and plan to start my daughter off the same way. It won't be long and they will be grabbing youre set ups. wicked

Took the advice to use the casting gear with the spool brake cranked down and 40# mono. It worked out just great and we had a blast. My son had a fish follow deep 2 times that saw on the sonar. His figure 8 tactics were.... interesting but he had a ball and I did too.

Thanks for the advice.

I have a 5 year old who likes to musky fish (after accidentally hooking one from the dock at age 3!). I have him use an older abu 5600, with braid and now moved him up to a 6'6 rod. The thumbbar and smaller spool work well for him (manage the brake to minimize backlash). I usually have him throw smaller stuff. He's yet to land one as his attention span is limited, but he knows all the baits and how to work them! I'm looking forward to many years with my fishing partner.
