Hey,I have had the same musky follow different lures 5 times going back to early June. She is a very nice fish, more than likely the biggest Ihave ever seen on this stretch of river. This morning she went around 5 times on an 8" Jake, a few minutes later she followed # 13 BootyTail 5 times before I accidentaly nudged her with the rod. She has never seemed agressive more like trying to see what is going on with HER territory. 3 times, same spot. What can I do to make her eat? Pounder,13" Granma, Live bait? I have had her going on a 6" Crane and a MagDawg. I can usually get them if they stay for a day or 2,she seems to like it where she is at. Any help would be great!
Now part 2. today a friend in another boat hooked into a musky, I was near and came over to him and netted it,he forgot his net. I was in a position to unhook the fish, lightly hooked in the jaw and the hooks came out with no problems.A quick measure,43" for those that are wondering and back into the water. She stayed on top and rode the current, not much,to the dam where she stayed upright with no help.We continued to fish and had an eye on her the entire time, she was facing the current and had no problems breathing. My friend said her gills were pale and she did have a 5" fresh wound on her side. I watched this musky for over an hour and 15 minutes, she seemed ok just never swam deep. Anyone have any thoughts on what might have happend or what was wrong? I know fish come through the dam but they are beat up,she wasn't like that. Thanks for the help! Paul

I can only offer suggestions on the first question. The second is out of my range of knowledge.

I would try downsizing your baits, in my experience when I get a fish to follow, especially more then once in a day I try to down size to something that I normally would not throw. like a small glide, or crank. Are you going back to her right away? or are you leaving and then coming back after letting her re-set for a little while (like an hour or two)? I see that you said you used a 6" crane.. SO I know you did try that. It could be because you are finding her just outside of the feeding window? But if she goes around DBL 13s, try putting on something like an eagle tail with just one blade and bring it past her slower then you did the first time, or faster depending on what speed you were at when she followed. Think outside of the box and try something you may not normally grab for... See if that helps.

The other answer I had, was maybe the musky gods are testing you to see how many times you will come back before they give up the goods...

Try approaching her from a completely different angle.

I second the idea of giving her a different angle. Taking an "inside out" approach is a good one if you can get inside of the structure you are fishing.

Otherwise, anticipate that she will be following and try to trigger the strike before you get to the figure 8 by changing bait direction 10' from the boat. Or, again as the bait is away from the boat, change your retrieve...speed up, slow down, or really crack the bait a couple of times to try and get her to eat.

Also, get on her during your best windows..monrise/set or weather.

Thanks for the help! It is a river, she sits on a shelf in 9 feet of water before it drops to 16' .The current is a backflow/eddy but can be normal, darn near unfishable, depending on what gates they have open in the dam. The spot is less than 40' form the dam. I have tried going up,down and sideways,I might have to venture onto shore! I have also tried the sun and moon phases to ty and get her with no action... I will try the downsize again I may have the bigger lure bigger fish mindset. Thanks again for your help! Paul
