Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Adjusting Lures?

Message Subject: Adjusting Lures?

Subject: Adjusting Lures?

I have heard that many anglers will adjust their baits. Ex: Take a slammer: Leave on the first treble hook, take out the second and put on a single hook at the rear.

I was thinking of experimenting with this method but have a few questions:

1)What type of slit rings do you use?
2)What type of treble and single hooks do you prefer?

I would think not having all those treble hooks is less harmful to the fish and the angler, but will truely decrease hooking percentages?

Thanks

I like eagle claw trebles (good price) and wolverine spit rings.

I use small bucher splitrings for jerkbaits and stainless steel ones for other smaller pike lures.

I use gamakatsu hooks for small pike lures, and will start using VMC conecuts for bigger lures next season. They have been ordered.

size depends on the size of the lures

Stay away from the x4 hooks from VMC. They're overkill and have a terrible hook-up rate. I prefer the Mustad light wire hooks. You'll have to reduce your drag and replace them from time to time, but you can get them so sticky sharp anything sniffing will get stuck. Definantly put them on your topwater! I only missed 1 hookup on the jackpot I rigged with them and he missed by a mile.

Split rings go with the Wolverine or Bucher depending on how big the hook hanger is. I know on Slamers they're narrow so you'll have to go with a Bucher.
