Posts: 128 | When looking at anything made the last several years, I can't help but wonder what everyone is doing for rod storage. And why did the in deck storage become popular? This really reduces the length available in the rod box-especially for 16-18ft boats. Just thinking out loud. Was looking at some of the tiller offerings from Lund/Alumacraft/G3/Legend/Crestliner tonight.

Posts: 128 | I'm going to rebuild the front deck section of my boat, and was looking at some of the newer boats to get ideas......I'm going to have to stick to the side rod storage though. I could get 10'ers in there if need be. I am going to close it off all the way to the bow though. To keep stuff in the front compartments from getting tangled with the rod tips.

Posts: 2754 Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | #1. Don't store them over winter in the boat! The rodents will chew on the handles of both the rods & the reel handles. Also, don't store your buck tails in the boat, they make great nesting material for rodents. I learned that the hard way- + $ 200 of bucktail's destroyed - Shumway Giant Flasher's, etc. However, it make's for a very colorful mouse nest in a boat compartment in the spring! Al

| You can get such quality two piece rods, it really doesn't make much sense to worry about storage length. BR | |||

Posts: 128 | I like my boat as is.....Before I would buy a new boat, I would upgrade my current boat with two 898's, a Terrova, and a few other upgrades. I'll look at the Recon Boats for ideas though.

Posts: 582 | The only time my rods are in my boat is when i am fishing. otherwise they are in a rack in the cottage. I would never leave them in there over winter or locked in boat locker for weeks. That is just asking for mold or rodents to take advantage.

Get rid of all your rods and get all 2 piece rods because Ben has said you don't need one piecers. Just because you like 2 piece rods doesn't mean we all should. Let's have a little diversity in musky fishing. Center rod storage is useless to me. Only my jigging rod fits. My rigging rods are even too long.

Posts: 32951 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Hey, unless you can offer a better solution..... I have a center rod locker in my boat that takes 8'6" rods with no issue. Zach's boat takes 9' rods with no issue. Depends on the size of the rig.

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | buying a boat based on rod storage ... about as ridiculous as buying engineered bait storage systems. ever consider get a rod and reel, some baits and then use them instead of being so focused how/where to store them???

There is clearly a need and you can now get 2 piece rods that are the same or better quality as high end rods up to 9'. I got mine through Dadson custom rods, but I know of a couple others with less expensive models. Trucks typically are not made to hold 9' rods and it is not always safe to keep them in a boat. Just offering a solution that fixes the issue. BR Edited by BenR 8/11/2012 3:25 PM

Posts: 99 | Rod storage in your boat is a big issue. I have a Ranger 692 and the biggest rod I can get in the rod lockers is a 7.6. So my rods ride up front hanging over the edge all the time. I can put them down the center but then I got rod tips in the middle of my walk way. I was looking at the new Ranger 621's and the biggest rod they advertise holding is a 8', so back with the rod storage problems again.

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | an on-deck option ... it works great and the innovation goes to brad nelson. i copied and used a 4-rod mount, although you can find holders for up to 6 and maybe even more. for long trips i use the small bunjees and tie the rod ends to the pedestal base to ensure they are stable, but for most use they stay put nicely and don't get banged around with the butt-ends just on the deck near the nose of the boat. i'm sure you could do some form of cable locking to keep the quick criminal away, but if i'm someplace where i need to "empty" the contents of the boat for security, i put the rods in the truck or in the house/cabin/garage etc... i think we have fewer criminals in WI than you do in IL and MN. | You can get up to 8' rods on the port side rod locker and you can squeeze an 8'6" into the starboard side storage locker into a 165 Navigator. I use collapsible rods when I want something over 8'. You can also lay 3 or 4 rods that are not in use on the platforms running along the sides. If you only have two guys in the boat they aren't in the way for the most part. There's always the chance that you could step on one, but I never have to worry about them falling out of the boat.

Less criminals in Wisconsin, because they all come to MN to steal our fish
