Posts: 153 Location: Storm Lake, IA | Looking to purchase two mapping chips for my bow and console Gen 1 HDS-7's. They do have the insight mapping built in but from what I can tell it doesn't do LOTW. I'm looking for the best chip for navigating LOTW and also the best chip for contours on the bow. What does everyone prefer?

Posts: 349 | Lakemaster at the bow (you'll have to search the web to find a 2011 version) for working structure. It's got 1 ft contours and is very accurate. Navionics at the helm for navigation. It's a simpler map to read and has main channel run lines (not positive about this but I have an older nav chip with them so I'd assume the new chips have them as well). Get the canadian hydrogaphic paper map for whatever area you are in as well.

Posts: 349 | Sorry to add to the thread but I have a relative question. Has anyone used the Lowrance Insight 2012 HD or Pro chip on the Canadian waters of LOTW? I was told by salesman at scheels in Fargo that they have all of MN LOTW in HD but little to nothing on the Canadian side. Haven't had the chance to actually look at one though... the area's I'm wondering about are the NW Angle, Sabaskong Bay, and Whitefish Bay (Yellowgirl and Regina Bay would be a bonus as well but not important).

Posts: 76 Location: Bartlett IL | Used the Lowrance Lake Insight Pro Card on LOTW last month. We were up at the Angle and the chip was pretty accurate. Easy to use for navigating. Liked the detailed contours over my 2010 Navionics Premium North that I have at the bow. Thought about picking up another Insight chip for the bow but it is just blue water off the main track in the Narrows North of the 43 can. Maybe an update next year. Let me know where you are going & I can take a couple screen shots.

The Insight 2012 Pro chip has Lakemaster data for most of the Ontario side of LOTW. If you check out a 2010 or 2011 Lakemaster chip, that is what the Lowrance chip will cover with 1 ft contours. That along with Lakemaster's data from MN, WI, Dakotas, and MORE... For 100 bucks, its pretty awesome!

Posts: 218 | I fish the Angle all summer, and I have no use for the contour lines. One does not need the contour line to avoid the rock as they are pretty well marked. The Lake Master map in my Humming Bird seems to be missing some hittable rocks that are on the older Navionics chips. Once one chooses an island to fish, the depth finders are much more important than a map chip. Most rocks off islands are marked and are located in the general area they are shown on the map, and the depth finder will tell much more than a set of contour lines. Map chips and the paper maps are not 100% accurate, and one is fishing in very shallow water where depths change in a matter of a few feet. Contour lines will not help as much as the depth finder and keeping ones eyes open looking for rocks. Any map will keep one away from most hittable rocks; even on a 10-inch screen the contour lines seem to add too much unhelpful clutter. Just my opinion and thoughts…

Posts: 153 Location: Storm Lake, IA | Frank- Awesome thank you for the help. I was hoping that would be the case. Did the pro chip have the main track navigation lines like the old N avionics chips? Edited by Doonan 8/7/2012 8:55 AM

Posts: 180 Location: Elgin, IL | Agreed with Frank. Had Lowrance pro card on console and lake master up front. Good contour, channel routes and hazard marks. Otherwise outside the narrows was nothing but blue water, generic. Actually liked it.
