Does anybody use the Shimano Calcutta LJV for burning DC-10 bucktails? If so how do u like it and what rod is the reel paired with? Thanks.

Best reel ever made for burning bucktails and ripping rubber, I can burn bucktails faster and easier than the Trinidad and the Tranx with an LJV. These are the only reels I use.

The reel works good for moving baits fast. I have one on a 9'6" Thorne Bros XH Preditor rod and it's usually my "go to" rod. Works nice with most everything. The only draw back on the reel is the length of the power handle is a little long for twitching minnow baits and took some getting use to. But you will like it for burning 10's!

Have you guys ever had problems with the handle stripping out or engaging on a cast?

It can watch it when throwing hard or heavy and have the handle down.

As Hulbert has pointed out numerous times you can easily make the handle engaging a non-issue if you keep the button pushed down throughout the cast. Doesn't matter what position you leave the handle in.

I have an LJV paired with a St Croix sling blade. Love it for double 8's and 10's.. It might be a little overkill for smaller bucktails.

Take off the nut on the handle...but in a few drops of red thread locker, and you'll be set. Best reel ever made in my opinion. And in my opinion as well...nothing is over kill...speed kills!!! Great reel for every application, including twitching, topwaters, night fishing, big rubber, gliders, etc...one rod and one reel...that's how I roll....LOL. You won't be disappointed with this reel.

I would agree its one of the best reels money can buy. what most people don't understand is it is the same exact as a 400te it just has a power handle. I personally prefer some of the power handle combinations that Daves reel service has to offer with the 400te.

The LJV has a Cold Forged Aluminum Frame as the TE has a Machined Aluminum frame, the Cold Forged will not flex under load so when you are buring DCG10-13 the reel will stay inline with the gears and be alot smoother. Also the LJV has a Brass Level Wind Gear as the TE has a Plastic gear so the LJV L/Wind gearing is stronger over the TE, so the LJV is the reel to get for burning DCG10-13 over a TE. Some guys have no problems with the stock Power handle on a LJV and some have to go with a Trinidad handle which I don't understand because all you have to do is keep your thumb on the spool release button on the cast so the reel will not engage during the cast.
