I'm going to try sucker fishing this fall and have a question about transporting them from the bait shop to the lake and between lakes. If the drain plugs have to be out of the live wells what do you use to transport suckers in if you can't use the live well?

Big old Rubbermaid storage bin with an aerator for me.

Worst part of suckers is storage and transportation, the storage cause the garage smells like butt after a few days and transportation because you aren't cleaning spilt water until the springtime.  The benefits outweigh drawbacks for sure.

drill 2 holes ( or 1 if you only use 1 aerator) just under the lid of a coleman cooler...string the aerator hose thru = no spilled water in truck.

What Brad said. They will last a long time in one of those.

In Minnesota - just remember that you can't transport water from the lake, or water that was on your boat on the lake. The only legal way (as explained to me by a conservation officer 2 weeks ago) to really transport suckers in Minnesota is to keep a cooler or something with fresh well water in it in your truck. You will need to transport the suckers from the boat to the water in your truck without transporting the water from the boat. You can't simply keep them in a cooler all day in the boat and then bring the cooler from the boat into the truck for transport.
Good Luck!

The plot thickens. It sounds like a guy might need a large cooler for the truck and second one for the boat. How long would 3 or 4 suckers last in a 5 gallon aerated bait bucket?

In my experience, maybe an hour or two if you're lucky provided we're talking 14"+ sized musky suckers and also provided it's fall and the air temp and water stay cool.

Unfortunately, big suckers are tough to keep alive. They like plenty of water, like it to be cool, and need it to be aerated.

In 40 degree water I've kept 4 in a 10 gallon aerated cooler for 5 days
