I have always appreciated the positive threads about quality service people have received. After contacting Mark Anderson at Dave's Reel Service regarding problems with my Calcutta 400B I felt I should let everyone know what top notch service I received.

The reel just has not had that smooth Calcutta feel for a while and I was also concerned that the power handle was causing damage (I always paid attention to the handle position, but still every once in a while the reel would try to engage on the cast. Not a good sound) I have taken the reel to several other businesses in the area and was always told it just needed to be cleaned and nothing else was wrong.

I called Mark and he said to bring the reel by at my convenience. I figured I would drop the reel off and get a call back in a few weeks like most places. I was wrong. Mark asked if I had a few minutes to spare and upon answering "yeah, sure" He pulled up an extra stool next to his work bench and before I could blink my reel was disassembled and Mark was pointing out the bearing that was going bad, a loose fitting that was causing some play. He also explained that the power handle is not counter balanced correctly. In trying to keep the overall weight down, Shimano reduced the counter balance weight which can cause the handle to spin on the cast. In less than a half hour from the time I had arrived, the reel was back together, new bearing, new plate in the cast control, fitting shimmed up, new custom counter balance added to the power handle and feeling better than the day I took it out of the box. 6 hours from the first phone call the reel was perfect again. Not too shabby in my book. (and he gave me a back up spring for my Saltist...we all know that issue).

If you have any issues with a reel, I highly recommend calling Mark Anderson at Dave's reel Service. AND if your are using the Shimano power handle on the Calcutta 400BSV, 700BSV or 300EJ do your reel a favor and have Mark correct the counter balance. Mark had me spin the handle before and after he made the fix. After he pointed it out to me I was amazed at how I could feel the difference. Before the fix the handle throw the reel off balance with every revolution. (Picture of my reel, with the new counter weight, attached)

Don't mean to sound like a commercial, but the guy earned my business going forward and I wanted to give him a credit.

I needed the reel nut retainer and the screw and he sent it right out to me for no charge. Excellent service. I will continue to use him.
