Do any of you small river fisherman ever have any luck fishing the faster water (rapids) for muskies when the water starts warming up? I think I'm going to start to pay a little more attention to these areas!

I have caught fish in the faster water just below a set of rapids.

Rapids are great areas depending on the time of year. If they're on the move, whether it be moving due to peak feeding times/condition or moving up/down river, they're great places. Typically, your deeper areas/areas with cover will be hotter spots for more consistent fish, but areas near rapids or even in them are worth running a search bait through no matter what time of year. With river muskies, weather and water conditions are the biggest influences on your success.

I second this, along with the break-line going into the rapids.

Yes, almost exclusively when it's really hot. Top and bottom of rapids. I've kicked em out of runs 6-12 inches deep when it's REALLY hot. They're in there with the suckers and redhorse.

Surely. But I fished bigger rivers and the trick seemed to be to find that spot on a spot and hammer that spot until the fish you assume is holding there hits your bait. Like smaller rivers, the best spots seem to be at the beginning or end of holes. Assuming a bigger river, drift/troll the holes over and over and if you can spot a piece of structure within the hole you have struck gold. The two types of structure will be either timber clumps or changes in the rock shelves that make up many river bottoms. Either way, the biggest fish in the area will often own that spot, sitting behind that specific structure, out of the current. The fish is oriented with nose to the current, but holding with minimal effort behind the structure, and is watching for easy prey to pass just overhead. Put your bait in that spot at the right time and you have a shot at one of the biggest fish in that stretch of the river.

Nope, muskies hate current, they always hide behind rocks and logs, they never go into fast water, gotta fish the slowest parts of rivers...I am of course being sarcastic!!! i am a river nut, love fishing em,that't where I got my start... If you can wade the rapids, try putting on your uglies, least fav weighted Burt/squirrley burt.Cast down stream and RIP it up,bang into every rock you can,if you get snaggeed, slack the line, the water will take it out.It is amazing how hard a muskie will strike doing this! Another fav is to get a topwater, try a topraider, tallywacker, lees, globes, pacemakers etc cast downsteam, let out a bunch of line and simply hold the position, being over some typye of structure is best. slowly reel it in,giving pauses of a minute or 3 along the way. Try burning bucktails across the current. I know some days the fastest water, coming from the dam was the only place I caught fish! Oh,going against current works, fish swim up and downsteam! I will leave it at that...Paul
