| Has anyone been fishing deer this year. I have been fishing it for around 10 years. I only live 8 miles from the lake so it is a home body of water for me and I fish it weekly. I have never seen the fishing so poor. The tribes have speared it heavily the last few years. Is this finally starting to catch up with the population of fish? Just looking for thoughts,opinions or advice. |

| I fished it a couple weeks ago and never saw a fish. I talked to a guy on the water who told me that the tribes registered something like 160 muskies that they speared last winter. To me that seems like a lot of fish for a lake that size. He also told me that muskies Inc won't stock it anymore because of the spearing but I don't know if there is any truth to that. What makes me curious is if 160 skis were registered, how many go unregistered. SAD. |

| I agree with your comment about the spearing being sad. It has been such a great fishery over the years. It is sad to see all the effort of catch and release being wasted just for human greed.the truth is the tribes are hurting themseves just as much by damaging the lake. It will be hard to teach their tradition when there are no fish to spear. I guess I will have to work a little harder and drive a little farther. |

| The sad thing is it is happening at Bone Lake as well just down the road. What makes it worse is the tribe is from Northeast Wisconsin and they drive the 4 hours to do it their instead of their home waters. |

| I agree bone has taken a beating also. I have seen a real drop in the size of the fish.At least a guy can work a few. I would have to say one more year of spearing and it will be just like deer. |

| Have the other muskie lakes in the area been speared as badly as deer and bone? also, what are water temps up there? thanks |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | The issue is winter spearing, and the numbers of fish taken are not regulated like the Spring spearing are. I firmly believe this needs to be addressed, but to date no one has 'officially' taken up the challenge in the DNR or with GLIFWC to my knowledge. Bone was hit really hard, and so was Deer. Both are basically put and take fisheries, and can be rebuilt, but what would be the point of that if the result is unregulated harvest leaving the lake at well below targeted TAC levels. |

| Water temps got in the low 80s last week they have droped about four degree now..... I wish someone in our state had the courage to take on this winter spearing issue. I have talked with a member of the conservation congress about this issue. They feel it is a dead end and there hands are tied. So what can a person do? |
