Posts: 2 | Hello: I have read through tons of threads on this site and was so conflicted on what to get as my first Muskie setup. I was going to get a 300 te and a pole in the $120-$150 range, but stumbled upon this deal for $329! and pulled the trigger: Abu Garcia Revo Toro Winch 60 Reel / Fenwick Elite Tech 8'6" ETM86XH Rod - Custom Musky Baitcasting Combo I subbed out the rod for the 8' version. I was looking for a great all purpose setup to take on an annual 1 week Canada trip. I want to throw the big buck tails as well as some standard mepps Muskie killers and cyclops spoons. I caught 3 Muskie on a bass setup last year and was hooked on Muskie fishing (biggest one was 37"). I know that this has been mowed over in excess, but is this a good setup for the money? And will it be versatile to throw a wide variety of stuff? If the general opinion is no, I will change to a 300 te and a pole within the described price range. I will only use it 1 week a year. Thanks

Posts: 283 Location: beloit | Sounds like a pretty good deal to me and it should handle everything except for pounders.

For use one week a year that should be more than ample. The Winch has a slow pick up, but if you want to throw big blades it will be worth it. The TE would be more versatile, but when you factor in the price difference and the amount of use the combo you listed should treat you well.

Posts: 18 | I have the 8' Elite Tech XH. It's a nice rod, able to easily handle dbl 10's, but still with enough flex to be forgiving. Never used the Toro so can't help you there. The St Croix legend turnament rods are nice too. The Top-n-tail would be a good all around rod.

Thanks That will be a great set up and should do everything you would like. Lots of people concentrate on gear rather than fishing it seems these days. Enjoy. H

You should be fine with the set up. Having said that, I own all of the items you listed and I would recommend the 8-6 with the TE. Overall, it will provide the most flexibility for you in my opinion. Enjoy!

Posts: 1726 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | That setup will serve you very well. Comfort is what I look for with fishing gear. If it is comfortable, you are more likely to use it for longer periods without pain or stress or stiffness in your arms. I fish Toro reels primarily and I love them. I would have gone with the 8'6", instead of the 8, but that is just me. The number one factor for you to remember is if you are happy with your gear, that is all that matters. A number of people I fish with have different gear selection and it doesn't really seem to matter what brand, length, action, weight, etc. We all catch fish and we all love our gear. One guy prefers brand X because they have treated him/her right for 20+ years. Another prefers brand Y because they are the new kid on the block and their customer service is top notch. Buy something that you feel you will be happy with. There will almost always be someone with something better or trendier in this sport than you. The bottom line is that if you are happy with your gear and take good care of it, most of the time it will work well for you.
