I know any time to fish is a good time but I was wondering if you had the choice, would you rather fish the new moon or the full moon period. Say 3 days in front of and 3 days after the new or full. Which would you choose and why? Do you do anything different during the full then you do during the new?

Seriously no preference for me. Both are good and weather will trump moon 95% of the time.

Give me the weather too!

I've never seen moon phase mean a darn thing other than seemingly more people on the water. Now moon position, as in rise/set means a lot more to me and I've seen that have a noticable affect if the weather is right.

Of the dozen fish over 30# that came into my boat over the years, I seriously doubt if more than three were on a new or full moon window. And of the last four, none have been on a moon rise/set or sun rise/set or a new or full moon window. So basically, just get some good weather and fish hard. Good things happen when you are on good water.

I second rise and set over phase, weather trumps all.

I started a thread about not liking the moon up. I usually fish during the day so I plan trips around the full moon period, when the moon is down almost all day. A week on either side is fine with me too. I just don't like the new moon when it's up all day. If you're a night fisherman you'd probably like the new moon phase.

Moonrise and set are also keys. I like moonset better as it seems to give a little better/longer window. Weather still does trump the moon at times, but you can't plan the weather pattern in the future so if I plan a trip I plan it when the moon will be down most of the day.

That's just me.

Tucker

Planned an entire season around the full and new moon periods back in 2005. Worst season I have ever had.

How about moon over / under? I seem to have the best luck around moon under for walleye anyway.

Every lake is different. I fish lakes that are fantastic under bright full moon conditions year in and year out, and some that are much better under new moon conditions at night.

Same goes for daytime. Many MN lakes I fish, especially in the fall have a great daytime bite under new moon phase, other lakes don't show a difference.

There is no rule for all waters. You have to find out what works better yourself.

fish don't stop eating because it's new or full or whatever...they have to eat and eat a lot when their metabolism says to do so... first and foremost i'd be more concerned about watching the moon rise/set/overhead/underfoot times when you are fishing and be on big fish spots or back to fish you raised...then watch the weather...time your outings if you can
if you are planning a trip tho and had to pick, it would depend on the time of year...sometimes it's best to night fish when water temps are in the upper 70s and i'd pick new moon...other times maybe full moon is best....lots of variables to consider ...if you are fishing in fall maybe time it so the moon is down during the day time as you might spend most of your hours from 7am to 6pm etc...depends on time of year, and like JS says..some lakes full moon night bite can be the ticket.

From experience I prefer the full moon and plan my trips around it. Yes, I believe weather is a major factor, but the lakes I fish just seem to cough up more of the big girls under the full moon. Also I've noticed that looking back at majors and minors more times than not somebody in my boat stuck a good one during or very close to these times.....so I'm a believer.

I can't believe that many people don't give the moon credit!!! I'll say new moon is my fave but I'll take the full any day!

New for me. I have some go-to spots for when the sun hits the trees during the new moon. I usually throw top waters on the flats and the skis come up quick with the light fading fast.
