Do you guys ditch the rubber pads that come standard with the DownEast rail mount rod holdders? I can't seem to keep them tight on the rail when using the rubber pads.

I can't seem to keep them tight on the rail when using the rubber pads. absolutely ditch them! I've been using nylon/plastic hose for close to 10 years and it works excellent...much better than rubber hose because I can adjust the tension of the rod holder so it can pivet on the rail... super easy to then adjust the rod angle to the water. It's the nuts for my down rods because I can drop the rod in the holder and then pivet the rod into the water, then to remove the rod from the holder I pivet the rod out of the water without having to fight outside the holder... my down rods are in the water 4-5' so it's a big deal to me.

Posts: 3240 Location: Racine, Wi | Good tip Jerry. I'll have to cut some hose up for that. I do use the rubber now, but have to tighten them way down when I'm fishing on Lake Michigan to keep them from diving on me. That makes a VERY big mess when running 8-10 rods and having a rod or two dive on you (not that I've had that happen. ).

Location: 31 | Thanks, just make sure it's a harder type plastic or nylon, (I got mine at Farm-fleet) that type of material versus a true rubber will allow you enough friction so it doesn't slip, but can still adjust the angle of the rod. Obviously you have to experiment with how tight they need to be... in the fall you typically have to tighten them up a touch due to larger baits and things shrinking up slightly from the cold. You don't need the size of the tube be that close because you have to split it anyway just to get it on the rail. If the diameter is a little small... no worries, too big... just cut a portion of it off so it doesn't overlap.

Posts: 416 Location: Madtown, WI | I just wrapped some hockey tape around the rails, seems to be doing the trick. My only problem is the bolts keep coming loose and they aren't easy to tighten. I think I'm going to stick a nylon nut on the bolt to stop it from coming loose....
