Location: Minneapolis, MN | I have seen several muskies multiple times on a rock pile near my cabin right up on the rocks in the middle of the afternoon. I have literally dragged my lures across their nose but they want no part of it. I've tried fishing it with just about every lure imaginable and nothing seems to get them interested. It seems like they might just be sitting in the warm water on the rocks and not in feeding mood at all. Is it possible to get these fish to bite? There is deep water (30+ feet) around the rocks so I was thinking to troll the open water maybe. |

| Of course it's possible to get these fish to bite! Most likely with a non-feeding type of reaction bite. Pi$$ her off!!!! |

| Here's what you do. Get a heavier action spinning rod, the longer the better. I use my steelhead pole. Throw some 20 pound braid on there and tie a 50 pound flourocarbon leader to the line. Tie a large hook to the leader and throw on a 5 inch sinking minnow and "wacky worm" those muskies. You may need to lay the bait down right in front of their noses and twitch it up, but it should induce a reactionary flare of the gills and sucking in of the bait.
I use the longer rod to make longer casts so you don't spook the fish, and the fight is really fun. Check your water temps, though, as the fish will be quite tired when you get them landed. No need to stress those fish if the water is really warm. |

| I would imagine visible fish like these in shallow water may have fed and are there to initiate the digestion process of the warmer water temps. I've seen this too, but the fish are below some shoreline cover and they were not moving fast. Being that I've not caught one of these either, I'd wager that they've got a bellyful.
If anyone catches one like this, would check their belly and let us know what you've discovered? |
