Posts: 29 | We all know a jerk bait is in every great musky fisherman's' arsenal. They work great for all circumstances and have been a go to bait for every great fisherman. From going from the all time great jerk baits like Suicks ect. all the way to the new stuff like Phantoms ect., they seem to do the job as the All Time leading "search baits". So to get to the point.. They work great as a search bait to FIND active fish. What did all the people that pioneered the jerk bait back in the day (beside the death pause) do to get a fish to bite so well on them?

Posts: 285 Location: Price County WI | I always thought that they were all jerk baits.... You have to pull or "jerk" them to give the lure action. Glide baits (phantoms, hellhounds) and chop baits or whatever you wanna call them (suick and bobbie) are both types of jerk baits in my book.

Posts: 1295 Location: WI | Suicks and Smity baits...lots of follows on those, but lots of eaters too. The secret is being there when the fish want to eat! Throwing in a pause every once in a while, middle of the retrieve and at boatside seems to help. Edited by JKahler 6/13/2012 1:48 PM

Posts: 2361 | This is a problem that comes up. There is confusion as to what constitutes the jerk bait group, and what constitutes the glider group. I believe that most who have fished for a while do not consider them to be the same, and there is some overlap amongst baits as to what they actually do, and how they can be used. I would say the jerk baits are those that go forward only when being pulled, and quickly stop when not pulled. I might describe them as having a lot of turbulence. I view glide baits as those that continue through the water after being pulled and slowly coast to a stop. I would describe them as streamlined.

Posts: 20248 Location: oswego, il | What do they call the ones with a lip then? Crap, suicks have a lip at the rear, big daddy and the ripper have them in the front but they are not crankbaits. I have about 700 musky baits and at this point could not tell you what any of them are! Edited by ToddM 6/13/2012 3:17 PM

Posts: 415 | I don't necessarily consider jerk baits "great" search baits. I always think of something that you can fish faster and cover more water with a better search bait, like bucktails and crankbaits. I've always looked at jerkbaits to be better to try to get a fish that previously followed to bite, or anyplace you are pretty sure there's already fish there. I usually use jerkbaits more during times when fish are slow or inactive. Edited by Ja Rule 6/13/2012 3:29 PM

Posts: 553 Location: 15 miles east of Lake Kinkaid | I agree with ja rule. I use gliders and pull baits situationally; I really prefer to powerfish with blades, topwaters, or crankbaits. The reasons jerkbaits are a tried-and-true tactic is because they often produce strikes when other lures only produce follows or no action at all. Triggering effects are different with each make and model of jerkbaits. A volume of books could be written on this subject.
