Guys:

I just got two new HDS7's. One on the dash and one on the bow. I have an ethernet cable and thus they are networked.

Problem I have is it's not doing what I expected it to do. So last night one the lake I got the owner's manual out and still couldn't figure it out.

It looks like I need to change the "scope" to either local or global depending on what I want on each unit.

It wouldn't allow me to change the scope. I saw scope in the menu, but it wouldn't allow me to highlight or edit it.

Basically, here is what I am looking to do:

1) Each unit reads it's own depth
2) Each unit reads it's own temperature
3) I have a Lakemaster chip in one and Navionics in the other. I would like to toggle between the 2 chips depending on which lake I am on and see the same chip on each unit.
4) When I mark a waypoint, I want to be able to see the waypoint on both units. That was pretty much the whole reason for being networked. So I can mark an waypoint on the dash, and then use the bowmount to be able to fish around it.

I'm sure these are fairly easy fixes and someone out there must know how to set this up properly?

Thanks - Ball Cap

I could be wrong, as the units I networked are a 27C and a 520C, but I'm pretty sure you need more than the ethernet cord to "network." In fact, I don't have an ethernet cord in my "network" and my two units do everything you ask except share chips. You can't share chips between the units, you need a separate Lakemaster/Navionics for each unit.

Basically, what I had to do was set up a NMEA network in the boat and my two units share waypoints and share a GPS puck.

Whynot is correct. The ethernet cable does not allow for waypoints to be shared. You need to network the two units which will then allow you to share waypoints. The ethernet cable will allow you to exchange data between units and add other add-on features.

For example, if you want to be able to choose which transducer reads on both units, the ethernet cable allows you to do that. If you want to read StructureScan on both units, the ethernet cable will allow it. Reading mapping cards off one unit will not allow you to read cards on another unit. This has never been allowed, you'll need to have two seperate mapping cards in each unit.

OK - I have 2 separate cards, so that's not a big deal. What do I need to do to "network" the units then?

How do I share waypoints between the units?

Since the HDS units have built in GPS receivers, I'd guess you'd need 2 NMEA T-connectors, 2 NMEA 120 ohm caps, a NMEA 12-20' extension cord for the front unit and a NMEA 5-8' extension. That's assuming nothing has changed in the past 3 years since I did mine. One thing I do remember, though, is these parts were a PITA to find, and they're not cheap. Figure on this costing you over $100 unless you can find someone who has some used stuff.

As far as sharing waypoints, I want to say once I hooked up my network it happened automatically...but I could be wrong. You might have to change a setting to have them share data. That should be easy to figure out once everything is hooked up right.

OK - so what you guys are telling me that just by connecting the units by the ethernet cable, it is not networked. I have to go into the units and tell them to read each other, which I did. So by connecting them by the ethernet cable and telling them to be networked, that's what I have already done.

You guys had me confused by saying that the ethernet cable doesn't network them.

This is one reason I don't network my units. I picked up a Yamaha engine interface cord for cheap a while back and after it got here and $100 later in extra crap, I'm still not able to plug it into my HDS. You'd like to think you could just plug it into the unit, but that's not even close to being the case. You'd also think the network cords and connectors would all be the same...that's not the case either. I knew networking was a pain before I bought the interface cord, so I knew the can of worms I was opening up. As of now it's still all sitting in a box in the garage. Maybe someday I'll get tired of looking at it and install it.

There not networked until you wire the NMEA network "backbone" cabling. I have two LCX units and once the network cables were run I didn't have to do anything, the new waypoints just started showing up on both. One note, any waypoints that were made prior to the network in place were still only on the locator they originated from. I solved this by downloading them onto a SD card, and then uploaded them into the other locator. Now I have all the waypoints on both graphs. I thought wiring the network was easy, ordered a "nmea starter kit" and followed the diagram in the manual. Its a pretty simple system, designed to allow you to add in future components on the network with the use of a "t" connector. Just carefully follow the diagram. Yours should be pretty simple if your just hooking up the two locators. I don't know if it has changed with the HDS units, but the NMEA network has its own power source, which needs to be switched so it doesn't drain your batteries when not in use-its on the diagram- and there are plenty of people that have learned the hard way on this. Use your acccessory switch or add one. I got a illuminated one from NAPA so it is easy to see if left on. Maybe TJ will chime in more on this, he is the electronics wizard. A lot of good electronics info on the electronics forum on walleyecentral too

I have a HDS 10 and HDS 7 and all I have hooked up between the two is an ethernet cord and mine share waypoints. Not for sure how but they do.

They won't share the map chips and I doubt navionics or lake master would ever allow it in the first place.

I have two hds units linked solely with the Ethernet cable and once I plugged it in they automatically shared all waypoints without doing anything but hooking up cables.

Let me grab my manuel and get you specifics, but Ethernet gives full Waypoint sharing, editing, adding etc...
You cannot share chips between the 2 units,
It is a matter of selecting sources for depth, temp basically making them stand alone on readings,
