What oil/grease does everyone recommend? I'm thinking about getting some Hot Sauce, but the $10 price tag makes me want to find a cheaper alternative. I've been using Abu without any issues. Is it worth the extra money for the Hot Sauce?

Hot sauce oil for the bearings, abu oil for the levelwind (heavier oil), and Lubriplate grease for gearing and brake plate. Any marine shop will carry lubriplate grease.

I use Ardent Reel Butter Oil/Grease. It's made in the USA unlike the Hot Sauce that's made in China.

I was considering the idea of using different lube in different areas, especially because each brand has a different viscosity.

I was considering Ardent since it's a few dollars cheaper, you get a little more per bottle, and I like how it's made in the US. But is it worth the price/quantity difference compared to Hot Sauce? I've never tried either, but from what I hear Hot Sauce is like gold. I want whichever works the best, lasts the longest, will aid in a longer cast (probably not any issue for musky reels, but this will be used for bass reels, too), et cetera.

Really? When everything in this sport is so expensive... spend the extra $3 and get Hot Sauce. It's all I've used for the past few years and it's great.

I don't know the reasoning but I was told to never use 3 in 1 oil on a fishing reel.

I was curious which product performed better. If I can save a few dollars and have similar or better performance why purchase a more expensive brand? You're right, worrying about the $3 difference is pointless compared to the amount of time and money goes into all of this.

I have used both Reel Butter and Hot Sauce, no complaints from either. Much better than the stock Abu or Daiwa stuff. I also heard that Rocket Fuel was good as well.

For Musky reels if you use oil in the spool bearings you will have to reoil every 20 hours of casting and only use 1 drop of oil per bearing, do not use anymore then that per bearing. I like to use grease on the spool bearings on Musky reels, then you don't have to relube for a good 6 months of hard fishing. On Musky reels you don't want a light oil for the spool bearings like you do on Bass reels, so I use CORROSION X if I do use oil for the spool bearings because it has corrosion protection 3 x more then any other reel oil. Then on frame bearings I use a corrosion grease and also on the worm gear. Then on the drag washers I will use Cal's Drag grease, I like a very light coating on them to waterproof them and they will be smooth when the reel is using drag, do not use reel grease on the drag washers, Shimano and Cal's are the only 2 drag grease that I know of.

What do you recommend for a bass reel? I'm trying to get the longest, smoothest, easiest cast out of a lighter lure (1/4 ounce-ish).

On a bass reel first take the spool bearings out of the reel and then clean them with carb or brake cleaner then soak them in Acetone over night then spin dry them and add 1 ( one ) small drop of REM OIL or OUST MET OIL both are some of the lightest oil made but you will have to reoil once a week of hard casting. Also make sure the brake ring is clean and add 1-2 drop of oil to the ring so the brakes are smooth.

Howdy,

Is that the same as their Reel X or are you talking about a different product? Also, is there a place you can recommend online to get the best oil and grease for reels?

Thanks,

Ruddiger

Corrosion X ReelX and Speed X, I like the Corrosion X for Musky reels, for Bass reels use Speed X.
There is not one place to buy all the oil and grease that I know of.

Howdy,

On their corporate website: http://www.shop.corrosiontechcorp.com/CorrosionX_c2.htm
it seems to come in a number of different bottles and applicators. Only the version for guns seems to be user friendly so as to get a drop where you want to put it. What size bottle/applicator do you use?

Thanks,

Ruddiger

I buy the C/X Gallon size $93.50, which last me for about 6 mths. Go to Bass Pro and go to the Fly fishing dept and look for a small plastic bottle that has a very fine outlet not sure what it is called but it is in the Fly fishing dept, that is what I use.
