I want to take my 13 year-old to Lake Wingra in the morning. I have never been there. I am having trouble finding where the boat launches are and how to get to them? Is there one or two launches? Enough parking on a weekend? Thanks in advance! - Jim ![]()

It's in a park off knickerbocker.. It may difficult to get a spot on a weekend, if your not there early..

Posts: 255 Location: MadCity Wisconsin | Jim.....Hope you found the launch okay. Best way to get there is Monroe Street, turn onto Knickerbocker St. all the way to the deadened. The launch is all the way to the end. As guest said parking is a real problem unless you find a spot early A.M. You are allowed to park your boat trailer on the grass since there are no marked trailer sized parking stalls in this parking lot. Back your tow vehicle into a marked stall and trailer can rest on the grass behind your vehicle. Just remember not to park your tow vehicle on any part of the grass, trailer only. Also make sure your boat trailer does not block any portion of the paved pedestrian walkway just east of the parking stalls, or you will get a ticket. Another oddity about this launch......its the only launch in the City of Madison that you do not need a boat launch sticker. Good luck

Posts: 706 Location: Richland Center, WI. | Steve, I thought any trailer parked on the grass would get you a ticket? Did this get clarified that if the trailer was parked on the blacktop walking trail you get the ticket? Wanted to get out on Wingra but not worth the trip for a ticket. Please let us know the scoop. Thanks, Ken

Posts: 706 Location: Richland Center, WI. | I guess that is pretty clear as my trailer is not a motorized vehicle but....., what if it is hooked up to my truck, is it now considered a motor vehicle? Thought I saw something on the Cap City muskies site where people were getting ticketed. I will do some checking. Ken

Lake Wingra, Knickerbocker Park......You MAY back your vehicle into a marked parking stall and rest the trailer on the grass. The tow vehicle must be parked on the paved parking lot. Your trailer will be allowed on the grass since there are no marked areas for trailers. This has always been allowed. You may not park any portion of your tow vehicle on the grass or you will receive a $50 ticket. You may not block the paved pedestrian walkway with your trailer when parked, also a $50 ticket. Unfortunately, last week, some newly hired "Park Rangers" did not know this policy and ticketed 3 vehicles for trailers on the grass. The tickets were issued in error and dismissed by City of Madison Parks Supervisors. They were probably confused because this is the only boat launch in the city that allows trailers on the grass. All other launches have marked areas for trailers and vehicles. Steve R

Thanks all. I didn't feel like driving all the way to Madison only to find no place to park. We went walleye fishing instead and had a ball. I really appreciate the information. I will try to get the kid up there during the week when he gets out of school. That leads to another question. I am sure that body of water gets weed choked. At what time of year do the Wingra weeds start causing problems? Thanks again. - Jim

Posts: 255 Location: MadCity Wisconsin | Jim.......Unfortunately after 3000 carp were taken out 4 years ago the water cleared up to such extent that the Milfoil on this lake exploded. This lake is very difficult to fish from June on. Weed choked. Unintended consequences of taking carp out is the Milfoil has taken over 70 per cent of the lake. In the spring it is fishable in about a dozen spots. After June arrives forget it. For the first time ever the County has assigned a weed cutter to this lake. All it does is give the milfoil a temporary "haircut".

Location: Contrarian Island | yah real brilliant plan that was..the lake is pretty much a waste of 200 acres now....they should restock the carp! it's sad...before the carp project the size avg and health of the fish was greatly improving.... was a fun lake ..now it's a waste of space.

Posts: 968 Location: N.FIB | What about the dam, they made it higher so now a lot of muskies can't make the jump, between that and the milfoil I think the lake has gone down a bit compared to what it was.
