I’d like to take a moment and share some great news. On October 24th we completed another chapter of the Catch & Release Petenwell Musky Challenge. The funds raised from the tournament back in May of this year were released by stocking muskies in the Wisconsin River / Petenwell Flowage. We gave a home to 300 fourteen-inch muskies. Our location was the south end of the river at the north end of the lake. This location provides cover, food and access to deep water.

Our stocking was dedicated in memory of Mark Zrofski and Russ Miltimore, contestants who passed away in 2001.

Also, on this day we helped stock another 525 fourteen-inch muskies through the efforts of the Musky Alliance Club. These muskies were stocked up river at two different locations.

Kalepp’s Fish Farm out of Dorchester, WI provided the muskies for the Petenwell Musky Challenge and Musky Alliance Club. It’s our sixth year working with Kalepp Fish Farm.

Mike Keys of “Living the Outdoors” was with us to tape this event for an upcoming show.

I also want to acknowledge the efforts of the Consolidated Musky Club and the Petenwell Musky Challenge for stocking 265 fourteen-inch muskies in the Wisconsin River. Placement of these muskies was the section between StoraEnso’s Biron Mill and Wisconsin Rapids Mill. Also, some went in the Wisconsin River between Domtar’s Port Edwards Mill and their Nekoosa Mill.
The Consolidated Musky Club raised their own muskies through dedicated work at their ponds. The PMC made a donation in helping their efforts and October 10th it all paid off.

The future is looking good for the Wisconsin River and Petenwell Flowage.

Congratulations to all organizations in stocking 1,090 muskies.

Thanks for the work you do each year during the Tourney Todd!!

The fish we raise in Larry Schauers ponds each year would not get fed if it were not for donations from the Tourney, our club(if anyone wants to join, please email me for an app.), and other private donors. Thanks!!!!!

Petenwell, at over 23,000 acres can use all the fish it can get!

Is there any natural reproduction from these stocked fish in the flowage or the river? How is the growth rate? They sure don't have a shortage of carp to eat.

jonfloater, yes there is natural reproduction. Our growth rate is good. Along with the carp we thousands and thousands of white bass.

This was the Petenwell Musky Challenge sixth year stocking. So far we have stocked 1,582 muskies 14-18 inches long. It is estimated the sizes of our fish from 1997 are about 38-40 inches.

According to the DNR there is no natural reproduction in Pete. I've witnessed a little in a couple of the feeders, but it is definately not enough to sustain the population. The vast spring water level fluctuations are to blame. The muskies usually spawn down here in late March through mid April(on a mormal year) and this is just when the spring floods arrive and the water level starts to drop and climb daily. It is a resevoir, so we can't complain too much, but I wish they wouldn't drop it as much in winter, and save a few of the weeds.

Here are pictures from October 24th when we placed 300 muskies from the Catch & Release Petenwell Musky Challenge and 525 from the Musky Alliance Club. In three different locations 825 Muskies 14-inches long went into Wisconsin River/Petenwell Flowage.

I find this encouraging news. I graduated from Nekoosa in 1990 and there really wasn't much of a musky fishery then. I went to college and then moved South for 4 years. Well I've been back in the midwest, Rochester, MN for 3 years now and this summer was pretty much my first year of musky fishing. Next summer when I get home to visit my parents I'm hoping to get out musky fishing as I only live a mile from the landing at the end of Lynn Hill Rd. Just curious though how long have they been stocking the portion between the Port and Nekoosa mills? From my trips back I've noticed the landing in the Nekoosa Park is relatively new, so I don't think that section ever got much fishing pressure if any for any species at least before they put that landing in. I can't wait until next year.

Andy, this was the first year that I know of this area being stock. The Petenwell Musky Challenge has stocked all six years below Nekoosa Mill. I'm not sure if Consolidated Musky Club has stocked in the Port pool before or not.

The Petenwell Musky Challenge will have it's 7th tournament this May. Keep an eye out on this site along with muskie411.com for tournamnet information.

I lived in Stevens Point for many years. The stretch of the Wisconsin between Point and the Dubay dam has been stocked for over twenty years. A great site to check the presents of muskies in all bodys of water in Wisconsin is the DNR website and go to muskellunge.[;)]

Even though I though I don't fish WI anymore, you guys deserve a big thank you! With low size limits, spearing, single hooks, you guys still have the utmost respect for the resource. Keep up the good work!
