Posts: 865 | I just went threw this same dilemma, I was prepared to buy a 61 toro winch but after talking to about a dozen guys or so I was advised not to get the winch. I was told the ratio (4/1) is forcing you to work even harder to burn the tails in. I have 2 401 Calcuttas and was told that is a much better reel and I should keep what I had and pass on the winch series reels. I was told that the harder to find 5/1 ratio toro revo 61 does a very nice job but they are getting very hard to find. I took the advice of the people that had the winch series and were not thrilled with their performance and replied they would not buy another, and I did not buy one. So I will be using one of my Calcutta 401 TE reels, and I purchased a toro 61 with the higher 5/1 ratio, I figure I will give this reel a shot, and if it does not work well with the bucktails I could use it as a standard musky casting reel.. But ask around for yourself. Mike Sr.

Posts: 131 Location: Ottawa, Ont | Ya some of the ppl i have talked to are saying the revo toro is the way to go, but in the higher ratio. I have a revo toro not the winch used it for one season and had to send it out for repair already for the spoil pin breaking free allowing the reel to not reel the line in. so that sucked, I am thinking im going to get a calcutta te 401 as well, i have a cardif which has held up nicely its just thier heavey thats why I was thinking of the revo toro winch well thanks.

Posts: 147 Location: Chesterton, Indiana | I have this same rod on a Calcutta TE Reel. It works great for me. As for the Abu reels I can not speak as I don't have any of them and would not want to miss lead you by saying something about a reel that I have no experiance with. As for me I will stick with my Calcutta TE just because I have never ever had any problems in the years with any of them that I own.

I'm in the same boat - I'm torn on the winch or calcutta. Looking for more opinions. I can get a good price on a TE so wondering if that is a better choice than the Winch. Am I correct to say that the Calcutta is a more versatile reel? What can the winch do well over the Calcutta? thanks

also is the calcutta te 200 series too small for Muskie?

Posts: 31 | It all depends on what you want to do with this reel. Can't go wrong with the calcutta as an all around reel, it will work for everything. The winch is better for big cranks/jerks not burning blades......

Posts: 742 Location: Grand Rapids MN | The Revo winch is a nice smooth reel and has its applications but like mentioned the speed is limited. I'm not saying that I expect to burn tails with this reel but I really have to crank fast to get to my 'normal' presentation speeds. A dream for slow rolling blades or heavier pulling cranks. I haven't tried a 401 yet but that's next on the list.

Posts: 1360 Location: Lake "y" cause lake"x" got over fished | Personally I can't speak for the TE... However If I could break out and afford one I would not hesitate to pull the trigger. That being said I own both the Revo Toro 61 in the 5:4.1 and a winch in the 4:6.1. The winch is nice for some of the heavier stuff like the 13s but I only use it in the fall. You don't have to go as fast and the added power is really nice. The 5:4.1 is GREAT I love it and would buy more if I could. IMO it was a not a wise choice for Abu to dicontinue it. They have the 4:6.1 and the 6:4.1... why take away the middle ground reel... IDK, anyway... Now since you are looking at the Abu winch, I would look at possibly getting the Abu HS 61 in the 6:4.1. It is a 29" per crank and I think that would be a great buy as far as burning goes, and still far less expensive than the TE. I would love to get my hands on one of those! I am a huge Abu fan. The only way I would go to Shimano is for the TE or the.... yep you thought it... Tranx.

I already have a Toro 61 HS so maybe the TE isn't the wisest choice than?

Posts: 31 | If you already have the HS, I would highly recommend the TE..... Use the HS for burnin blades and the TE for everything else..............

Posts: 150 Location: Central Minnesota | Can't beat the TE for all round use and for #8 and #10 blades. The thing that makes the 400 TE so awesome is its durability. Musky fisherman are tough on their gear and the 400 TE has proved itself over and over again. I don't think there is one TE owner who regrets their purchase. I know I don't regret mine. Good luck with your choice.

so the 400te with a power handle would be a good option over the winch? i.e. more versatile? Considering I have a Toro HS already?

Posts: 20 Location: wild rose, wi | I,d personally take a good look at the curado 300 EJ . I have one on a top &tail and another on a long ranger. For bucktails they are unbeatable. They might be a hair light on double tens. A slingblade with a Calcutta 400te will throw just about anything, even the lighter stuff.
