Okay my new boat has a 5 way flat plug my truck has a 4 way flat. I have looked for an adapter and came up empty. Anyone care to walk me thru how and where the 5th post wire gets tied into the truck?

That's the brake disarm wire designed to disarm the hydraulic brakes so you can back up a hill. It's blue on your trailer plug. If the trailer was braked, it would wire to the back-up light.

I did this once with my old truck, got tired of putting in the lock out for the trailer brakes. I opened up the tail light and found the reverse light, followed the wire down and t-tapped that wire into a 5 wire plug. So, when you put the truck into reverse, the brakes are disarmed.

Okay not that its hard to do or anything but I am confused. I know the trailer has brakes on it, dont' know if they work cause I only had a 4 flat plug hooked up to the trailer and it let me back up the driveway when I got home just fine. Should the breaks work even if I don't have the trailer plugged into the boat?

So what I need to do is buy one of these and then tap into my reverse light?

What is the make model and year of your tow vehicle? It's likely there is an adaptor that fits in the harness.

If you have a seven pin Plug on your truck then they make an adapter that goes to a straight four and a straight five. If the breaks are hudraulic then they work all the time. Like steve said the wire is to turn them off when you are backing. I got mine at NAPA. If your truck only has a 4 flat you will need to wire a new plug in or just use the stopper on the trailer that prevents plunger from applying breaks. I would talk to an auto parts store or dealership before cutting wires on the back end. They probably will have a wiring harness that will plug right in somewhere under the truck back by the tail lights...

This is what I used...

My trailer was hydraulic, so when you were backing up if the weight of the trailer pushed forward, the brakes were applied. So, if you were on flat surface, you could back up carefully without them engaging, but most of the time they did. This was a shorelander and I had a metal key that fit in the tongue that locked out the brakes.

Its a 98 toyota 4 runner. It has a 4way flat. The reserve had no fluid in it. Im guessing I am going to have to fill it up and bleed the brakes to get them working again.

Yep to the bleeding. Look for leaking. The fluid went somewhere.

As for the wiring. They don't make a 5 way connector specific for your vehicle, so the next best thing would be the below to make one.
