Was out this past weekend and throwing baits with my penn international 965. Half way through the day the thing would make an awful noise for the first 10 feet or so of line that shot off the reel during a cast. Any ideas what this might be? Quit using it being afraid to damage it anymore.
lil help anyone.
thanks
kly

your brake blocks (that brake on the reel's spool when you cast to prevent backlashes) are worn out. Have them replaced. I had the same problem on my calcutta 251

Dude, make sure the thumb bar is going all the way down when you cast. Had that prob. on a reel, could be it. If that doesn't work, pick out an address in the phone book + send it to the wife of that household, explaining that it was left at "your" apt. + that the affair is over...then imagine the dude of the hooch coming home w/ no idea of what is about to happen![:0]

*Sorry Shep! For once in my life, I may be able to FINALLY reach a goal...definitely would be a first! Once the goal has been achieved on 1-1-2003, hopefully things will return to abnormal.... [::)]

Square Pants!! Man, this is just not fair![:blackeye:] You pop in once every two weeks or so. Just in time for my shakes of withdrawal to just about end, and then .... BAM! There you are, and they start all over again.[:0]

Kly, I agree with Divani. Might try a little oil. When that happens to me, I'll dunk the reel in the water. Usually lasts for the rest of the day.[:)]

Divani's right, what you're hearing is chatter. The beginning of the cast is where you have the most acceleration of the spool. This is where the centrifugal brakes really come in to play. Replace the brakes and clean the race, and you should be good to go.

HI guys,
thanks for the help so far. Would it affect the brakes wearing out any quicker if you have the magnetic drag backed all th way off? I think I have two brakes in and two out, but the knob that you turn is always all the way off. Allows me to thumb my casts, which I prefer to do.
If I took it apart how would I be able to tell if the brakes are shot?
Thanks

Kyle, it really doesn't matter. The brakes are only a buck or two at the most. Replace them, lose the magnets.
