Location: Muskegon Michigan | I have a 2005 115 Mercury 4 stroke on my boat. It is the last year the power heads were built by Yamaha . This engine makes water in the crank case if used for trolling which we do a lot. I was told to change the oil every 80 hours which can be is many as every 10 days in the summer. It is not acceptable. What can be done to stop this engine from making water in the crankcase? I have been told that putting in a hotter thermostat will stop the problem. Has anyone done this?
I am told that condensation is the problem. First off how does water get into the fuel? Would a line drier help? How about running pure marine gas? I am sick and tired of changing the oil in this thing. Mike

Location: Hayward, WI | Are you sure it is water and not gas getting into the oil? Have seen quite a few that would get gas in the oil but never water in the oil. With the ones that got gas in the oil hotter thermostats help, as does running ring free in your gas and running the he!! out of it for a couple of hours. This was mainly a problem with the rings not seating properly from the motor not being broke in properly, if they where never ran hard and the rings did not seal it will allow some gas to get into the oil. |

| Seems to me that Jason Long had an issue with his Yammy getting water in the crankcase several years ago. Do a search here, and you might find it. |

| Replace the thermostst. When the motor runs cold condensation from the combustion air runs past the rings into the crankcase. Happenened to me with my 50 hp 4 stroke. The stat was stuck open by a small piece of wire insulation. |

| I have the same motor and the same problem. I had mine pressure checked and it was all good. The mechanic said the same thing, condensation from running at low RPMS. I troll alot and it does build up some water. I just periodically pull the drain plug to let it out and deal with. Mine runs great and I put a lot of hours on it. |

Location: Maple Grove, MN | My 115 Yammy did that. New spark plugs and running both Ring Free and Sea Foam seemed to take care of it. At the very least, make sure the spark plugs are gapped properly. |
