Location: Okoboji | Whys that Steve, I believe it originally had auto paint/clear from what I can tell. Did they do that in the 2001 models?

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | That's gelcoat. Boats are built 'inside out'--The process for the application in the mold is:
Clear coat in mold.
Polyflake mixed with clear resin
Back-up color gel coat
fiberglass/resin layers
Plain colored gel:
Some builders clear coat first, some do not
Gel coat
fiberglass/resin layers
No regular paint will stick to the old cured resin, you need a molecular bond and you will need to make absolutely sure the entire surface is prepped properly. That takes a two part 'epoxy' style paint or resin and a gun that shoots poly and resin mix, then the clearcoat after cleaning or another gun. If you are going to use polyflake, you need to lay down the base coat first, then the polyflake mix, the clear coat. To say that's a challenge is an understatement.
Way easier and just as good looking to use Imron style paint and clear.

Go there and you will pick up on plenty of pointers and hints on what works, what doesnt work... Theres plenty of carpet-installing postings too... I believe that you and a friend can do it in a day... I'd be more than happy to help you out if you need it...
Steve is correct about the building process...
From what I see at the bass boat forum... the process with automotive clear coat can be exhausting... if you dont do it properly... your top cap will be peeling within few years... where you will still have to strip the boat then redo the gelcoat...
Theres also a post thats permanently on top of the renovation forum... that explains the process involving wetsanding... if I can remember... if you wet the topcap and the shine is there, you can salvage it... if the shine is not there, it needs to have topcoat re-applied... I frequent that website to help me with my boat and trailer... TONS and TONS of info!!! |

i used the west system for my repairs, safe to say west is some awesome shiz i will post some befores and afters with it on here when it is done. feels nice to paint something besides baits, its been awhile.
