Alot of hooks rusted after my trip to Canada! It's just surface rust that appeared in two days, but what's the best way to remove/ prevent this from happening? Thanks in advance!

If the rust is only on the tip where you sharpened the hook, a file should take it off. I would not worry about rust on the bend or shank of the hook.

WD-40 would keep them rust free.

I solved the rusting hooks problem several seasons back by including a 5 gal. bucket with my boat equipment. When a lure comes off the line it goes on the bucket rim until it's dry and then - and only then - does it go back into the Lakewood, AFTER touchup with a file so it's ready the next time.

After you touch up your hook points with the file, paint the bare metal surfaces with a black or red permanent marker to prevent corrosion. JeffB's trick, works great.

I try to keep my baits out of the box until they dry. I have a small boat with limited space so sometimes that's a problem. I got a good habit from a friend of mine many years ago though. Every time I come home from fishing, my tackle boxes go in the garage with the tops open. If I'm out on a trip or something for a couple of days, I'll leave them in the truck capper with the tops open. I have little or no rust problems on my hooks.

hanks for the responses. Thats what's weird, I left my box open and they still rusted! Anyway, I'll clean 'em up and WD40 'em.
