| Gents,
I'm going to be spending a lot of time fishing a lake this summer where you need to find the cribs in order to be successful - so I'm looking for a handheld GPS.
I've searched the forums here and at Muskyhunter as well as all over the Internet - and I'm still not sure what to get.
Ideally it would:
-be readable in the sunlight
-waterproof
-accept waypoints
-accept lake map chips. I'll be in Northwestern WI most of the time. I've read a lot
about Lakemaster & Navionics - I think Garmin has their own brand of chips.
I don't have a clue as to which brand is better.
-If it could double as a hiking / motorcycling GPS, that would be great.
You guys have a ton of collective knowledge. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Location: Savage, MN | I have a lowrance h20c and wouldn't trade it for anything. It works great for me in the winter and switch the lakemaster chip to my hds in the summer. I know that they don't make the h20c anymore but you can find some used. I like it far more than any other new units.

| either buy the new Lowrance endura handheld or search a few sites and buy an H2O C from someone...i think I saw around 20 of them for sale today!

| Either a lowrance H2Oc or endura. If you will use it ice fishing at all, then definitely go with a used H20c. The enduras are touch screen which is just awful for ice fishing. The other thing is the enduras only take micro sd cards so you can't use the older chips in them. I picked up an H2O from the classifieds here this winter for $45. It wasn't color but for the price I couldn't pass it up. |

Location: Madtown, WI | I was using the endura for a season, I liked it but it did have it's shortcomings. I had three major qualms about it, it doesn't have full functionality with Navionics chip, you must assign a name to every waypoint, and it wasn't very accurate if you moved at a snail's pace. Otherwise, for the price it's a pretty decent and it's came in handy while cross country skiing, geo-caching (the wife does this, not me) and imagine it would be nice to have ice fishing. I think you're better off going with a smart phone though, same functionality except for the waterproof. |
