| Hey guys, I have a few questions about Suick Jerkbaits. How far and hard should you pull it down? Also, how many pulls do you do before you pause it and let it surface? Lastly, when it comes to the boat and a musky is following it what do you do? Also, what colors do you use that have worked? Thanks for any help. | |||

Posts: 238 | I would hire a guide. I did last year helped a ton to see the baits worked first hand. with the right rod and reel set ups for the lure I had him teach me how to work 5-6 diff. baits that I was having trouble with. Suicks were one of them Money well spent. -J

| I have seen this video several times . Each time I watch it I find it interesting that the guy describes that the lure was originally designed to be worked primarily through the action of the reel versus action with the rod. I wonder if reels made in the 1930's when the thriller was first made could actually produce that kind of action. The reels of today, but the 1930's I am not so sure. | |||

Posts: 262 | That's a cool video, not at all how I was taught to work a suick. Have to give that a try.

The rods back then were mostly 5' or so, not much sweep there... Yes sure I understand that the reel handle on any reel turns no matter the age, but thanks for clarifying. I am just not convinced that reels from that generation would have been very effective at producing the kind of action that the reels of today can. Seems it would have been a bunch of work with the very short handles most reels of that day had.

Posts: 32939 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | It's a combination of the reel and rod. I'm not turning the handle very fast, just using the reel to accentuate the movement. I spent the early 70's watching the Suick boys from Summit Lake and Antigo work those lures on Pelican, and they pretty much did the same thing. Plus, please watch the video again. I never say 'the lure was originally designed to be worked primarily through the action of the reel versus action with the rod.' I say that's how I'm making the lure 'dance'. Pretty much impossible to work a Suick 'wrong' long as you keep it under the water.

Posts: 15 | I've been wary of suick's for awhile...mainly b/c of being unsure how to tune the back portion. this definitely helps a lot, thanks for posting it

| Thanks for posting that. It really helped a lot. Just two more questions. How far are you moving the metal tail down and what are you doing to the side of the tail? Sorry but have never used a suick but I will this Spring. | |||

Posts: 1040 | I've been throwing Suicks for 30 years. Every time I've had one of them run like shown in that video, I figured it was "out of tune" and so I'd mess with the tail to get her going straight. I'll have to give this a try and see what happens. I couldn't help but notice that the way Steve was getting the Suick to work is real similar to how the Cabbage Ghost from Badwater Baits works. Only that bait goes deeper and may be easier to get the "swing" or "walk the dog" action. You may want to pick up one of those baits and give it a try as well.

Posts: 34 | Steve, I see in the video you are using a floro leader. Do you prefer them for suicks? If so, why, and in what configuration? Thanks Rip
