| I was following another musky troller this weekend and he told me over the radio that he was running at 4.5 gps speed and asked why I was going so slow . I had to speed up to around 5.4 to keep up with him ! Has anyone else noticed this differnce between paddle wheel speed and gps speed and witch one do you use ?

| Always use GPS speed because it will give you the most accurate readings. The paddle wheel just measures how fast the water is going under your boat. This will change if your going into or with the waves or if your in current. It will also vary from boat to boat depending on where the paddle wheel is mounded on the transom (all transoms are different as well). The only time you want to use your paddle wheel speed is if your river trolling. This will give you a closer idea as to what water speed you lure is working in (if that makes any sense). |

| I have a paddle wheel on my Bottom Line Sonar Unit and have checked against a Garman GPS unit. It checked out quite well. |

| I have a Bottomline Tournament 310XT that has a paddle wheel, mine is very inconsistant with speed, the temp gauge is very accurate though. I always use my GPS for trolling speed. |

| I have used this method for about five years now and it has put more fish to the boat for me while determining trolling speed for repeatability. For the paddle wheel speed indicator I use the Osprey by Moor Electronics Inc.,(www.moorelectronics.com),has a needle and reads from 0 to 8 mph and is more accurate then the speed wheel on your depthsounder. But that is not the only factor that I use in determining trolling speed at the crankbait.I also use GPS or speed over ground. This what works for me and catches me more fish.I take the speed from the surface speed indicator,Osprey, add it with the speed over ground,GPS Unit, and divide by 2.This is the speed that I have at my crankbait. When going the opposite direction, against or with the wind or current,I must slow down or speed up so that when I add the two speeds together and divide by 2 I get the same speed at the crankbait. This way you have the same crankbait action in what ever direction or conditions that your trolling on.It has proven to work for me,I use this system every day that I'm out trolling.

| I dont have a GPS...and only run a paddle wheel. At slow speeds its really not accurate. Add 1 mph and what the paddle wheel says and you will be close most of the time.
Adjust for down or upwind also.[;)]
At high speeds, my paddle wheel is only .5 off GPS...go figure.[;)] |

| On my LMS 350 the GPS speed is a little faster when trolling them my paddle wheel. |
