Subject: Left Handed Trinidad Equivalent???

Does anyone know of a left handed reel that is equivalent to a Shimano Trinidad for burning big bladed bucktails (#10’s, #13’s and above)? I am not confident in the quality of the ABU Garcia 7001 as I used to go through two 6501’s every year until I moved to TE’s. I put a Shimano power handle from Thorne on a TE and it helped some, but not enough (I liked the power handle so much I put them on all my TE’s except for spinnerbait reel). I am looking for something palmable that retrieves 36+ inches of line per crank and has a long enough power handle to provide mechanical advantage when taking in that much line on big bladed bucktails. I was looking online at the AVET SX Raptor 6/4 as it takes in 34 inches per crank. Has anyone fished one with big blades? I read a lot of good reviews on Accurate and the BX400 6:1 might be a possibility, but I am not sure how much line it takes in per crank. Both are lever drags but I think I could get used to that as I would the absence of a level wind. Anyone have other ideas or suggestions?

Avet is the only company that I know of that makes a high speed bucktail reel.

Thanks Bassinbob84.

Are you left handed? Have you ever fished an Avet? If so how easy is it to get used to the lever drag?

I would check out the Avet MXJ. I think it's very similar to the Trinidad 16n.

I bought an left hand Avet MXC this year. I really like the reel for burning big blades. I spooled it with 80lbs suffix. The reel is kind of noisy and rough, other than that I have no complaints. The reel has 4 settings on the engaging lever if the drag is set right; locked, some drag, light drag, and free. I had no problem hitting the free spool with a fish on and I had no problems re-engaging the reel after a cast. I noticed that the right rod seems to help reduce backlashes.

I usually run the free spool tension on #3 occasionally #4, if I go lighter I usually backlash with any wind.

In the past I would blow out a few 7001s a year. After a lot of use the Avet is still in great shape.

While I really like the reel it does take a bit more work to use as likely all reels without a levelwind will.

I also used it for lighter lures "ie" raddogs and it worked well for me. It doesn't work well for topwaters. Tried that one day.

Hope the feedback helps.

One more comment. I palm most reels and have small wrists and I usually get sore wrists after casting all day with other reels 7000s, TEs, etc.. With the Avet MXC I found that I can rest my thumb just inside the frame over the spool and cast all day without getting a sore wrist. I am elated about this!!

I picked up this same reel this year. I would echo very similar comments. My specific take away's...

- It is not like using std. baitcasters... The lack of a level wind and the mulitposition drag lever makes this prety unique. As such, it does take time to learn how to use this animal. I spent a few days in the mid season trying to learn, and i am still not as proficient as I need to be. I am not able to cast in the freespool setting. I haven't had that much trouble with birdnests since I first learned how to use a baitcaster... The next position provides slightly more spool resistance than i would like. With heavy baits, it's ok, but with bucktails in to the wind, my casting distance is crap.

- The quality seems top shelf... It really is a well built reel. Looks and feels great.

- The speed one can attain with this thing is friggen unreal... You can smoke a bucktail with little effort. As such, matching to an appropriate rod is important. I have it on a slingblade, and to be honest, i don't think that is the beat rod for this reel. I need to experiment more with this...

This is my 3rd season using the Avets. They are not the quietest reels on the market by any means but they are very durable. I can't seem to break mine. The MXJ is a larger version of the Avet and is comparable to the Trinidad 16N. It has a faster pick up than the little SX. I have both and they are great reels.

Chadster,

Does your reel have the spool speed settings on the side. They should go from number 1 to number 5. I set mine at 3 or 4 and get very few backlashes, but I do get more than with a levelwind. If I set it at 5 I would rarely get a backlash. I casted mine for about an hour today throwing a big lure that makes a double 13 seem light. It reeled it in with ease. I love the reel.

Thanks guys for sharing your personal experiences using Avet Reels for burning big blades! I truely appreciate it! I called Avet and spoke to one of the machinists / service tech's at Avet regarding line pick up of their reels. He sent me the list below of how much line each of their reels pick up. He said they are also redoing their website and the line pickup will be on it when complete. I asked him how he calculated the line pick up, and if he actually measured the line pick up of each reel or just calculated it based on spool diameter and gear ratio. He said he calculated it by measured each spool with a calipers. The following is what he sent me:

Below is a list of current Avet reels and their maximum line pick-up rate in inches per crank. The in.per crank will vary depending on how much line is actually on the spool. For consistency, this list was calculated assuming a full spool, filled to 1/8" from the spool edge. Numbers are rounded to the nearest inch.

The MXL 5.8 is a super nice reel. I've used mine for 2 1/2 seasons now. By far the best reel for big blades. I have figured out to turn my wrist 90 degrees so the spool is vertical instead of horizontal on the cast. This reduces backlash to nearly zero. Zero problems mechanically, use the longest rod you can for me it's a custom 9 footer. The first line guide is one size larger than normal and closer to the reel seat than most. This help with line slap. The reel burns #8 blades out of the water, it's too fast. I have to slow down or move to larger blades. I hope this helps.

How do you get service on these Japanese reels if needed? I just bought a tranx, and planned to force myself to cast with the wrong hand.... And now I see this option... Just concerned about service.

And why not go with the 2001? The 1501 spool size looks very small. The 2001 looks close to the Trinidad 16n.
