| A male's urogenital area is keyhole shaped while a female's is pear shaped. This is most evident around the spawning season (before and after) as these areas tend to be inflamed so sexing a fish during the summer and possibly fall is probably hit or miss.

I'm curious to know if the gentleman in the above link was able to confirm the bottom left fish was a male. Yes, the urogenital area is narrower, but the anal opening is still larger than the urogenital opening. This could be a smaller female, which might throw off one's conclusions.
