I have heard that some guys like to use fiberglass rods for live bait because of its ability to absorb the shock of hard hook sets at short range. Is this true? Its is more important when the temperatures are lower in the fall? If so, which rods have you found work best for live bait? I have only had live bait hanging off the back of the boat once while fishing with a buddy and am trying to learn something new.

I use fibergalss rods for Trolling and Suckers. It allows you to keep the drag a little tighter than with Graphite since the rods absorbs a ton of shock compared to Graphite or other composites. I personally do not put a ton of credence in the cold weather VS warm weather need for Fiberglass over graphite but others do so you kind of need to make your own call on that.... I just like them better for the above mentioned applications. I use Throne Brothers Custom Trolling rods which are fairly reasonable (around $225.00) but there are plenty of other fiberglass options out the from Ugly Sticks to House Brands from some of the crappy big box outdoor retailers that can handle the job too if you do not want to spend a ton of money. St Croix also has some nicer options if you arenot on a budget.

The best live bait rod I have used is Musky Innovations pro Series 9' Trolling/Livebait. I like the long rod for hooksets and to keep the bait further away from the boat. I sold 15 of these rods last year to customers they all loved them for suckers. I use the rod for pulling planner boards also, trolling and live bait.
If you click on the video link above and go back a few pages you will see me use this rod In a video for Stealth Tackle promoting my quick strike rig.
If you are interested In one PM me and I can hook you up.

Fiberglass is the safest bet for live bait fishing for the exact reason you stated: big shock on a short line with the hookset. As far as temperature being a factor, it's not.

BlackRiver Rods has a trolling/live bait rod that is a glass/graphite combo. Works really well in cold weather. My nephew used in on LOTW last summer for topwaters and caught a nice 47" with it. Also the price point is extremely affordable.
