I recently bought a GPS unit which came with a through hull transducer, but I was told I cannot use it through hull since I have an aluminum boat; is this true? If it is true, can I still use the transducer, but simply put it on the outside of the hull?

That is correct. If you have a thru hull ducer, you'll need to get a regular transom transducer. You cannot use a thru hull ducer on the outside of the hull.
