Muskie Fishing -> Fishing Reports and Destinations -> <50 degree H2O???

Well, since I sense some reluctance in giving tips for Mille Lacs, how about fall in general? Water less than 50 degrees? Am I wasting my time throwing lures? Should I just stick to live bait? Once again, any help is greatly appreciated.

Slayer, by your email address, you might want to stick to "Cool bud & tasty waves", or you can throw some slow moving jerk baits (my fav) or suick type lures, long pulls with an occasional quickened pace in to break up the pattern. Basically, you can continue to use most anything. Lost a 50" in 50 degrees last weekend on a tandem bucktail in 3-4 feet. So give your favorite plastic, wood, or hair a shot.

I don't know that it's a reluctance to give out any information about Mille Lacs. I have a feeling that it's more people not having much of a clue right now. I've fished it quite a bit this year and have come away not knowing what to do out there. The fish just aren't where you've normally found them in years past. The last 5 times I've hit the lake I have a total of 1 follow and a few pike. Definitely not typical of Mille Lacs.

As far as water less than 50 degrees...I wouldn't let that stop you from throwing artificials. They can be just as good or better than live bait right up until the lakes freeze. Jerks and cranks are what I've found to be my best producers in late fall.

Thanks TackleMan and AWH. I'll try both this weekend. A CheeseHead will be in the boat who claims that live bait is the only way to go this time of year. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't wasting my time throwin' da wood. I'm sure there will be some "tasty waves" this weekend (winds 10-20mph Friday). Luckily the boat is out of the water, so I can trailer it where ever I want. I'll give an update on Monday. Thanks again.

Slayer, I think the cheeseheads can use two lines which might make it more sensible to drown a sucker in addition to an artificial, but here in Minni, since we can use only one line, it doesn't make for much fun in my eyes. I'd be bored stiff. Good luck!

Depending on the weather, it might make sense to drag meat. One can cast for a while, and one can sit and warm up. I do this with my boy when it's real nasty out. Works out that I do most of the casting, and he does most of the catching. They usually seem to hit the meat when he's warming up!
