Has anyone on the board tried the GPS unit that will attach to the back of a palm, Ipaq, HP etc.. handheld PC? Pros/Cons? Also would one be better served just getting a regular GPS? All opinions welcome.

Thanks,
Ryan

slimm

Don't make the same mistake I did,I purchased a lowrance ifinder ,It's a nice unit and I like it , but it's not fully water proof.I forgot to read the fine print, also if your going to use it on your boat I would buy the permanent mounting kind. Those types have larger screens and get hooked up to a power source. I go through 2 double A s every time out. Also spend the extra dime and get the mapping type unit.[;)]

I'm gonna stick my two cents' worth in here - and that's probably about what it's worth!

If you’re new to GPS, I’d start small. Spend the 100 bucks on an Etrex and buy the $10 instructional video. Now you’ll learn if you really want to use it and if you like, need and appreciate the whole premise. If the thought of Longitude and Latitude boggles your mind and brings back memories of the terror of Science quizzes – you may want to pitch it over the side. However, if you learn with the simplistic Etrex you’ll not only get great basics, you’ll discover how you use it the most and can tailor the next one you buy to your needs. You can stick it in your breast pocket, lay it on the car dash, rubber band it to the tackle box lid or mount it beside your fish finder with their accessory bracket like I did. It’ll do the majority of the stuff the expensive units will do and you can learn a little map reading whilst’ you’re transferring the Lat/Lon of places on a map into the unit. It’ll read out your trolling speed to a tenth of a mile per hour, give you distance, bearing, and time to go till your next waypoint and lock on to twelve satellites when you’re on the water. You can put waypoints in ahead of time or mark the spot of a “follow” to return to later, all for the price of a couple of double A's every ten hours. And, you’ll really know what you want when it’s time to step up. It’s also readily resold to a buddy as an entry-level unit. Onliest thing is, if you’re my age, you’ll have to forget something else in order to make room to learn all the screens and keystrokes. But that’s a small price to pay for all the grinning you’ll be doing when you see how powerful it is.

Good luck!
