Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Sucker color?

What do your prefer in a color of the sucker you use. Some bait shops have white suckers, some have black suckers. I have heard the white ones are lake and black ones are river.

I prefer the dark color river suckers that take two men and an army to hold down to put the quick set rig on.

Anyone have anything to add to this?

Black, Black and more Black. The darker the sucker the better. I even painted the inside of my baitwell flat black so the suckers will stay darker.

To add some color to the sucker I have painted my circle hooks in Flo. paint and I'll add a tail spinner to the sucker.

I too prefer the darker sucker color. I get mine from Jerry's bait in Rapids or get my own from a stream or lake in spring and hold them in a pond. Jerry keeps them in a dark garage in a dark cement tank, and has a quick turnover. The ones that turn all white seem to be the ones(he says anyways) that are in a lighter colored tank and they are usually the ones I avoid like you guys. The wild ones that Jerry gets(never a tank scar on their lip) need four sets of hands just to wrestle a quick strike on them.

One funny note, the suckers we get from the bait store are all White Suckers(I doubt anyone carries Red horse anymore). Some people call them black suckers, grey suckers, etc, but they are all Whites--catostamus commersoni sp.(I guess college was good for a little useless knowledge).

Jason,

Thanks for posting this. I was curious if there was a preference last time I purchased suckers. I only noticed one black sucker in a tub of about 30 suckers. How many of you dress up your suckers, that is with a spinner, etc?

I like the blackest ones I can pick out of the tank. Haven't gotten any real black ones this year, yet. They definately seem more active, and hardy. Or is it hearty? I will put tail gunners on them, when I have made some up.

Oh yeah, I always put a butt dart on my suckers. seems to really help though the ones that come with herbie are a bit large for me.

My favorite suckers are the one's my PARTNER is using. I feel more confident getting in a few dozen extra casts on each spot while my partner is distracted with rigging up the sucker, removing weeds from the sucker, or untangling the sucker from stumps. The "black" suckers most seem to favor are more aggressive and I'd be willing to bet they get hung up more because they are constantly swimmin'.

I have nothing against sucker fishing... its just not for me. Secondly, with all the hours my partners and I have soaked suckers.... artificial lures have put many many more fish in the boat.

Question - is it possible what was once a dark lively sucker can become a nasty white sucker simply by being held in a bait shop tank that doesn't change its water frequently enough?

Jlong - the worst part about sucker fishing is not that they are a pain in the arse, its throwing away $10 in suckers at the end of the day and not even getting one sniff.

I like dark colored suckers too.If i cant find any ill carry a can of black spray paint with me in the fall and give them a quick coat of black on there backs.I also like the butt blades too,and twister worms pokeing there eyes out so they squirm in the water and shake there head violently.

Luke, don't forget that your get at least $10 worth of enjoyment when you break your sucker in half, killing them so you can through them out at the end of the day.

I don't know how is been for the rest of you guys so far this year, but I am willing to fish with pink, yellow or green suckers this year as long as I can find them. The bait shops I usually deal with are having a heck of a time finding suckers this year with all the rain and high water. Last trip out I was at five different shops before I found any bigger than eight inches. The ones I found were faded to near white but they were lively, fourteen inches long, and they even managed to catch some fish.[:0] [:p]

I love the black ones. Always add a tailgunner (butt dart in Schillinger terms).

Luke_Chine...why throw out all that good meat?

I second nwilds comment. Even my go to guy(Jerry's) has been having trouble getting the good ones, though he has had the best I've seen as of late. I've settled for much smaller ones this year, and I mean small(8-10"). Butt darts are weighing some of them down, though some seem to like them so much I name them Rock Hudson.

Hey, you guys are suckers for suckers. But that's fine.

Regarding wrestling with your sucker - R&H is now selling a device that's designed to hold your sucker down while you rig up the quick strike rig. From the picture, it looks like little more than a small board with some velcro straps. I was thinking I could build one for about a buck.

I have hit the motherload.... on the way back to Eau Claire today.... count'em 1..2..3 of the dark ones smallest 20" biggest is like 26"...

Stopped at a small "country" baitshop on the way back into town and the guy had a tank full of huge ones.. $3 each...If I had a swimming pool I would have bought every darn one of'em.

Now I wonder if the "clicker" tension on my reel will be enough to hold the 26"er... I'll find out on Sat.

Man this was like hitting the friggen Loto..[]

Oh yea...I like the dark ones too but I don't dress'em up in jewelry before they go out to play..

Hear in N.J. we use rainbow suckers(TROUT) The local hatchery sells them for 3 bucks a fish. They seem to catch the muskies eye a little better out hear. We just like to keep a low profile when using these guys for bait. The T.U. guys get a little upset when they hear about it.It is legal to use trout in N.J. as long as you purchase them and carry proof of purchase. The old Quick strike rig works well with these colarfull live baits.

I myself don't think that color is an issue, but the darker the sucker the more lively it will be and the more attention it will draw from the toothy ones. They are hardier and will last much longer than the pale suckers in the bait tank. I also used to use tail gunners on my suckers, but have come to believe that it doesn't really matter from what I've noticed. Now I might consider putting one on only in the darkest of water conditions, but only if using a quick strike rig. I feel that a tail spinner on a circle rigged sucker could cause some problems when the musky downs all that hardware. If I can get a musky to hit the sucker with a lot of hardware, I wouldn't use circles, the q.s. rig would work fine. When I go to circle hooks. the whole idea is less hardware and more pickups kind of theory.

This got me thinking to something I did a few years back....I injected a goldfish with food coloring. Guess what? It did not hurt it, the coloring spread, and I had a blue goldfish. This should work with suckers. Call me weird, but I'll be the one nailing them on orange suckers. The way I injected the goldfish was using an insulin syringe and I stabbed it kinda under the gills. One thing though, is that the coloring will not last forever, only about a week.

Don't buy the light colored suckers. They are the same as the dark ones but they turn that color when they are getting ready to croak. They are always the first to go when I put them in my tank. I can always tell when the dark ones are ready to split this world, they get light colored.

The dark ones are better because they are more healthy.
