Good evening all,
I have done some research and come up with some ideas. I am new to Musky fishing and have purchased an 8' St Croix H casting rod. Im looking for a reasonably priced decent quality casting reel to go along with it and would welcome your suggestions. Thanks so much!! Chris

Get a used calcutta b for around 150 and you can throw a lot of different baits with that set up.

I also have to agree, the only reels I fish now are calcuttas, they are very versitile and extremely dependable. If you don't have the 150 to spend, I know I didn't when I started, a reel that I found works really well for the money is the okuma induron 400. It is a similar reel to a calcutta style, only obviously not the quality, but it works well for most baits and you can pick up a used one for around 50-75. I highly suggest a power handle though, they are very hard to reel unless you have the power handle. Also if you can find one the diawa cvz is a good round reel, they are a few years old and you can get them for around 75 or less. Good luck and if you find an okuma and need a power handle let me know and I will see if I have one laying around.

also, if you end up in the situation of money and go with an induron, or other cheaper reel to start out, don't feel like you are throwing your money away, because the indurons are easy to rebuild and clean and the okuma customer service is cheap and knowledgable. When you get the money to upgrade to the reel you want, I still have all 3 of my indurons, I now use them for catfishing reels, they are perfect for that.

I will give a vote for the Calcutta B for a starter. If that is too much money you may want to try a Shimano Cardiff. The cardiff comes in left and right handed.

A 400 Cardiff would compliment that rod nicely. If you're buying new and planning on throwing entry-level lures it's the way to go. You aren't going to burn, reel big blades, throw big plastics, et cetera with this reel. But you will be able to throw medium-sized lures (regular Dawgs, Showgirls, 6" to 8" jerkbaits, et cetera) very well.

If you can afford a Calcutta B go with that. But it won't burn, reel big blades, or big plastics better. It's just a higher quality version of the Cardiff.

Okuma Akena is a solid reel at a great price. If you can spend a little more the Okuma Isis is virtually bullet proof.
