Location: musky waters , WI | Was wondering if there's any prep that must be done before painting on foil. Will the paint stick to the foil or do you need to put a primer or a clear over foil. Any info would be appreciated.

Location: Land of the Musky | What I have done on a few where I used aluminum foil was to put an impression on the foil using various things (toy tires, press into carpet, put scale netting behind the foil to give it textures, etc). Once I got the impression on the foil I spray painted the foil. Immediately after that I would take a rag with various solvents (depending on the paint I used) and wiped off the high spots revealing the original foil again but of course leaving paint in the low spots. You can even paint a nice perch pattern on the foil first and then wipe off excess paint and it gave a really nice looking foil look. Its been 5+ years since I made one but I will see if I can find any pictures. I used to have a step by step post but I am sure its long gone now... Many other ways to get really cool effects using foils for baits.

Location: Middletown, Ohio | I've only done a couple foil jobs on baits and I just coated the bait with E-tex after foiling it and then started painting over the E-tex and it worked out fine for me that way. Hope this helps.

Location: S.Wisconsin | I put a coat of etex over the foil so i would hae a nice smooth surface to paint on. Worked ok but im still a rookie at this. Good luck with the foil and post some pics |

| +1 I use D2T because it dries faster, but it makes a nice surface to paint on and if you screw up, you can easily wipe it down and start over. If you get paint on the bare foil, it's a "PITA" to get it completely off. |

Location: Land of the Musky | Forgot to mention, after I put a few layers of epoxy over the foil I do paint where you can see the edges of the foil to hide that. I have also seen( but never been good at it...) where someone will paint into each layer of epoxy to give an almost 3D effect. Looks very very cool but I also hear it takes a lot of layers and a lot of time. |
